Discovery 1 & Range Rover Classic Swivel Repair Kit (12mm Seals) – GA3163P / DA3163P

This swivel repair kit is intended for early Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic front axles that use 12mm swivel seals. On these vehicles the original seals and bearings are now decades old, so it’s common to see grease and oil working past the seals and making a mess of the inside of the wheels. GA3163P / DA3163P lets you rebuild one front swivel housing properly when the existing swivel ball is still smooth and free from heavy corrosion, without paying for complete swivel housings.

As these axles age, front swivels often start to leak oil or grease past the seals and the swivel bearings wear, creating play at the hub and vague steering. Left alone, that contamination can reach the brake discs and lead to MOT advisories or failures. This kit provides the main swivel seals, bearings and shims you need to strip and rebuild one swivel assembly while reusing a good swivel ball and housing. Installed correctly with the preload set as described in the workshop manual, it helps restore oil-tight swivels, reduces play and gives a crisper steering feel.

This kit covers one side of the front axle and includes:

• Joint washers, seals and small fittings required for a standard rebuild

Using a complete kit like this saves time over ordering everything individually and reduces the chance of discovering you are missing a small but important washer half-way through the job.

Vehicle compatibility

• Early Land Rover Discovery 1 models up to roughly VIN JA32850 using 12mm swivel seals
• Early Range Rover Classic models up to roughly VIN JA624516 using 12mm swivel seals

This kit is intended only where the existing swivel ball surface can be reused. Later vehicles or axles that use the later 8mm seal kits or different housings will need a different swivel kit, so please check your VIN and seal size or contact us if you are unsure.

When to choose this kit

Choose this kit when you are working on an early Discovery 1 or Range Rover Classic, the swivel balls are still bright and smooth, and you mainly need to deal with leaks or a little play at the hub. It suits working vehicles or budget-conscious owners who want to improve things without replacing the entire swivel assemblies.

If you are chasing a long-term “fit and forget” solution, or the swivel balls are heavily worn or pitted, a full swivel housing kit with new housings and balls will usually be the better choice.

Fitting notes

This kit rebuilds one swivel only; order two kits if you intend to overhaul both sides. Fitting involves stripping the hub, brake caliper, stub axle and halfshaft, then removing the old swivel housing and shims. Always follow the Land Rover workshop manual, set the swivel preload with a spring balance and the new shims supplied, then pack and refill with the specified swivel oil or one-shot grease. After a short road test, re-check for leaks and confirm there is no remaining play at the wheel.
