Brake Fluid
Brake fluid for Land Rover hydraulic brake and clutch systems, with standard DOT 4 and low-viscosity DOT 4 LV fluids for routine servicing, complete fluid changes and hydraulic-system repairs.
Start with the DOT or ISO specification required by the vehicle, then check the product page for the fluid type and bottle size. DOT 4 and DOT 4 LV are related specifications, but the correct choice depends on the braking system and whether low-viscosity ISO 4925 Class 6 fluid is required.

The main choice in this section is between standard DOT 4 brake fluid and low-viscosity DOT 4 LV. Check the brake-fluid reservoir cap, vehicle handbook or workshop information before ordering rather than selecting fluid by vehicle model or brand alone.
| Job | Best place to start | Check before ordering |
|---|---|---|
| Routine brake-fluid service | DOT 4 fluid where standard DOT 4 or ISO 4925 Class 4 is specified | Confirm the required DOT or ISO specification for the vehicle |
| Later ABS, traction-control or stability-control system | DOT 4 LV where low-viscosity DOT 4 or ISO 4925 Class 6 is specified | Do not assume every ABS-equipped Land Rover requires DOT 4 LV |
| Hydraulic clutch service | Brake and clutch fluid carrying the specification required by the vehicle | Check whether the clutch system shares the brake-fluid specification |
| Caliper, master cylinder, pipe or hose replacement | The correct fluid specification with enough quantity for filling and bleeding | Allow for the amount lost or drained during the repair rather than buying only for a small top-up |
Check brake-fluid specification before ordering
Brake fluids with similar names are not automatically interchangeable. Match the stated DOT and ISO classification to the vehicle, and do not use a mineral hydraulic fluid or silicone DOT 5 fluid in a system designed for conventional DOT 4 brake fluid.
Confirm whether the braking system requires standard DOT 4, DOT 4 LV or another specific fluid.
ISO 4925 Class 4 normally identifies standard DOT 4 fluid, while Class 6 identifies a lower-viscosity fluid.
Later ABS, traction-control and stability-control valve blocks may require the faster low-temperature response of DOT 4 LV.
Check whether the fluid is needed for a small top-up, normal service or complete system refill and bleed.
DOT 4 and DOT 4 LV brake fluid
Both products in this section are synthetic brake and clutch fluids, but their viscosity classifications differ. Use the required specification as the deciding factor rather than assuming that DOT 4 LV is automatically the correct fluid for every vehicle.
| Fluid type | Best matched to | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| DOT 4 | Brake and clutch systems specifying FMVSS 116 DOT 4 or ISO 4925 Class 4 fluid | Standard DOT 4 fluid for vehicles that do not require the lower Class 6 viscosity |
| DOT 4 LV | Systems specifying low-viscosity DOT 4 or ISO 4925 Class 6 fluid | Lower viscosity improves fluid movement through ABS, traction-control and stability-control valve blocks, particularly at low temperatures |
Brake fluid condition and servicing
Brake fluid absorbs moisture during service, which gradually affects its boiling performance and encourages corrosion within hydraulic components. A complete fluid change replaces aged fluid throughout the system more effectively than repeatedly topping up the reservoir.
