Gearbox, transfer box and differential oils for Land Rover drivetrains, with dedicated sections for Rover differentials, LT230 transfer boxes and ATB or limited-slip differentials alongside gearbox and specification-led oil categories.

If you know the component being serviced, use the application-led categories first. Rover Differential Oil covers the wider axle-oil range, LT230 Transfer Box Oil brings our recommended LT230 oils together, and ATB & Limited Slip Differential Oil deals with specialist differential designs where the unit fitted affects the lubricant choice.

Choose Gear Oil by Component

The quickest route is normally to start with the gearbox, transfer box or differential being serviced. The application-led categories bring together oils that may otherwise sit in different viscosity and API GL sections, making it easier to compare the products that actually suit the job.

Component / job Best place to start What the category is for
Standard Rover / Land Rover differential Rover Differential Oil The broad differential-oil hub, covering traditional mineral oil, premium synthetic oil and compatible specialist differential lubricants.
LT230 transfer box LT230 Transfer Box Oil Brings Ravenol MZG 80W-90 and VSG 75W-90 together as our traditional mineral and premium fully synthetic LT230 oils.
ATB, limited-slip or locking differential ATB & Limited Slip Differential Oil The specialist differential section where the design of the unit fitted determines the lubricant and any friction requirements.
R380 manual gearbox MTF-94 Gearbox Oil MTF-94 fluids for R380 and other manual gearboxes requiring the MTF-94 specification.
Defender Puma MT82 gearbox Ravenol VSG 75W-90 Our premium fully synthetic oil for the Defender Puma MT82 six-speed manual gearbox.
Later electronically controlled transfer box Special Transfer Box Oil Dedicated fluid for later active transfer boxes requiring specialist transfer fluid rather than conventional gear oil.

Rover Differential Oil

Rover Differential Oil is the main starting point for axle and differential lubrication. It brings together Ravenol EPX as our traditional mineral differential oil, RHP as our highest-performance differential oil, VSG as a fully synthetic 75W-90 alternative and dedicated LS oils for compatible limited-slip differentials.

This is the broad differential category. If the axle still has a conventional open Rover differential, start here. It also provides the wider view when comparing mineral, synthetic and specialist differential oils.

ATB & Limited Slip Differential Oil

ATB & Limited Slip Differential Oil is the narrower specialist section for upgraded differential designs. ATB, plate-type limited-slip and locking differentials do not all require the same lubricant, and an upgraded differential does not automatically require conventional LS friction modifiers.

Use this section when the differential itself is the deciding factor. The manufacturer's lubricant requirement for the actual unit fitted takes priority over assumptions based on the vehicle or axle alone.

LT230 Transfer Box Oil

LT230 Transfer Box Oil brings our LT230-specific recommendations together without requiring the customer to decide between 80W-90, 75W-90, GL-4 or GL-5 categories first.

Ravenol MZG 80W-90 is our traditional mineral LT230 oil, while Ravenol VSG 75W-90 is our premium fully synthetic choice. They carry different viscosity grades and API GL classifications, but both are deliberate LT230 lubricants. The complete formulation and its suitability for the transfer box matter more than treating GL-4 or GL-5 as the deciding factor.

Standard differential
Start with Rover Differential Oil for the main open-differential and axle-oil range.
ATB or limited-slip differential
Use the specialist ATB & Limited Slip section when the differential design introduces its own lubricant or friction requirements.
LT230 transfer box
Use the LT230 section to compare MZG mineral 80W-90 directly with VSG fully synthetic 75W-90.
Later active transfer box
Use Special Transfer Box Oil for later electronically controlled transfer cases requiring a dedicated transfer fluid.

Manual Gearbox Oil

Manual gearbox oils should be selected around the gearbox design rather than viscosity alone. R380 gearboxes use MTF-94-type fluid, while the Defender Puma MT82 uses Ravenol VSG 75W-90. VSG can also legitimately cover LT230 and compatible open-differential use, which is why the same oil appears in several application and specification categories.

Browse by Viscosity and API Specification

The viscosity and GL categories remain useful when the required specification is already known, or when comparing oils with similar nominal grades. They are a technical route through the range rather than a substitute for matching the lubricant to the actual drivetrain component.

Specification section Main role within our range
75W-80 GL-4 Gear Oil MTF-94-type manual gearbox oils.
80W-90 GL-4 Gear Oil Ravenol MZG and the traditional mineral LT230 route.
80W-90 GL-5 Gear Oil Traditional mineral hypoid differential oils.
75W-90 GL-4 Gear Oil Ravenol VSG for MT82, LT230 and compatible open-differential use.
75W-90 GL-5 Gear Oil VSG alongside high-performance and specialist 75W-90 differential oils.
