Discovery 1 & Range Rover Classic OE Swivel Housing Kit (Early, 8mm) – GA3164G / DA3164G

This OE swivel housing kit is designed for early Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic front axles that use 8mm swivel seals. On these vehicles the original swivel housings and balls are now decades old, and once the surface is worn or corroded there’s little point fitting seals alone – leaks and play soon return. GA3164G / DA3164G lets you replace the whole swivel assembly on one side, with new metal plus OE quality seals and bearings (usually Corteco and Timken) so the job is done properly first time.

It’s a great option if you’re keeping an early Discovery or Classic long term, or rebuilding the front axle and want steering feel and reliability back to how it should be.

What this kit does

Early Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic front axles often suffer from pitted swivel housings, tired bearings and flattened seals. That leads to oil and grease working past the seals and onto the wheels and brake discs, along with free play at the hub that usually shows up at MOT time. When the housing and ball are already damaged, a seal-only kit is really just a temporary patch.

By replacing the swivel housing and ball alongside fresh OE quality bearings and 8mm seals, this kit effectively resets one side of the axle to zero wear. You get tight, smooth swivels again, cleaner wheels and sharper steering response, and the front axle shouldn’t need attention again for a long time under normal use.

What’s included

Supplied for one side of the front axle, the kit typically includes:

• New swivel housing with swivel ball
• Top swivel pin and OE quality bearing
• Bottom swivel pin OE quality bearing
• Swivel housing 8mm oil seal
• Swivel grease sachet
• Paper gaskets and shims
• Joint washers, seals and small fittings required for a standard rebuild

All bearings and seals are OE quality from recognised manufacturers, usually Corteco and Timken.

Vehicle compatibility

• Land Rover Discovery 1 models up to roughly VIN JA32850 using 8mm swivel seals
• Range Rover Classic models from around 1985 up to roughly VIN JA624516 using 8mm swivel seals

• Your existing swivel housings and balls are visibly pitted, rusty or worn
• You know the axle is the early 8mm-seal type and want a long-term “fit and forget” solution
• You’re refreshing the complete front axle on an early Discovery 1 or Range Rover Classic and want the swivels to match new bearings, bushes and brakes

Kits are sold per side and there is a saving available when you buy a pair to overhaul both swivels together. If your housings and balls are still in very good condition and you mainly need to fix light leaks, an OE swivel repair kit for 8mm seals (without housings) may be more cost-effective.
