Description

This OE swivel housing kit is designed for early Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic front axles using the first type of swivel housings with 12mm swivel seals. On these vehicles the original housings and balls are now many years old, and once the surface is worn or corroded there’s no point fitting seals alone – the leaks soon return. GA3163G / DA3163G lets you replace the whole swivel assembly on one side, with new metal plus OE quality seals and bearings (usually Corteco and Timken) so the job is done properly.

It’s the right choice when you’re looking after an early Discovery or Classic that you want to keep long term, or when you’re rebuilding the front axle and want steering and braking to feel as tight as they should.

What this kit does

Early Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic front axles often suffer from rusty, pitted swivel housings and tired bearings. That leads to oil and grease creeping down the swivels and onto the wheels and brake discs, plus unwanted play at the hub that usually shows up at MOT time. If the housing and ball are damaged, a repair kit that only supplies seals is really just a sticking plaster.

By replacing the swivel housing and ball along with fresh OE quality bearings and seals, this kit effectively resets one side of the axle to zero wear. You get clean, oil-tight swivels again, sharper steering response and a front axle that shouldn’t need touching again for a long time under normal road and off-road use.

What’s included

Supplied for one side of the front axle, the kit typically includes:

  • New swivel housing with swivel ball
  • Top swivel pin and OE quality bearing
  • Bottom swivel pin OE quality bearing
  • Swivel housing oil seal (12mm type)
  • Swivel grease sachet
  • Paper gaskets and shims
  • Joint washers, seals and small fittings required for a standard rebuild

All bearings and seals are OE quality from recognised manufacturers, usually Corteco and Timken, chosen to give long service life.

Vehicle compatibility

  • Land Rover Discovery 1 models up to roughly VIN JA32850 using 12mm swivel seals
  • Range Rover Classic models from around 1985 up to roughly VIN JA624516 using 12mm swivel seals

Because axles and swivel housings are often swapped around over the years, it’s worth confirming your vehicle uses 12mm swivel seals and the early-style housing before ordering. If you’re unsure, contact us with your VIN and we’ll double-check.

When to choose this kit

Choose GA3163G / DA3163G when:

  • Your existing swivel housings and balls are visibly pitted, rusty or worn

  • You want a long-term solution rather than repeatedly fitting seals to a damaged housing

  • You’re carrying out a front-axle rebuild on an early Discovery 1 or Range Rover Classic and want the swivels to match new bearings, bushes and brakes

These kits are sold per side and there is a saving available when you buy a pair to overhaul both swivels together. If your housings and balls are still in excellent condition and you mainly need to fix minor leaks, an OE swivel repair kit for 12mm seals (without housings) may be a more cost-effective option.
