Defender Front Caliper Brake Pipes
Land Rover Defender front caliper brake pipes can be confusing because there are several short pipe types depending on age, brake setup and end fittings. These are the small pipes that run between the front brake caliper and the flexi hose / hub bracket area, not the main front flexi hoses themselves.
The important thing to check is the pipe shape and the fittings on each end. Some Defender front caliper pipes use a male fitting at one end and a female fitting at the other. Later versions use male fittings at both ends. The wrong type will not fit correctly.
Which Defender front caliper pipe do you need?
| Setup | Original pipe numbers | Best option | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Earlier Tdi-era male/female pipes | ANR2947 LH ANR2946 RH |
ANR2947 LH metal pipe ANR2946 RH metal pipe Stainless braided hardline kit |
Use the individual metal pipes if you only need one side. Use the stainless kit if replacing both sides. |
| Td5-era male/female pipes | ANR5785 LH ANR5786 RH |
Stainless braided hardline kit | The formed metal Td5-era pipes are expensive individually, so the stainless braided kit is the better-value option when replacing both front caliper hard pipes. |
| Later male/male pipes | SGB501790 LH SGB501800 RH |
SGB501790 LH metal pipe SGB501800 RH metal pipe |
These have male fittings at both ends. They are not replaced by the stainless braided kit. |
Male/female pipes vs male/male pipes
The earlier Tdi-era and Td5-era front caliper hard pipes use a male/female fitting arrangement. The stainless braided front caliper hardline kit replaces these male/female pipe setups, covering ANR2946, ANR2947, ANR5785 and ANR5786.
The later SGB501790 and SGB501800 pipes are different because they use male fittings at both ends. If your existing pipe has male threads at both ends, use the SGB501790 / SGB501800 metal pipes and do not order the stainless braided kit for that setup.
Best option when replacing both front caliper pipes
If your Defender uses the ANR2946 / ANR2947 or ANR5785 / ANR5786 male/female pipe setup and you are replacing both sides, the stainless braided front caliper hardline kit is the best option.
These short pipes are awkward to make neatly from copper brake pipe. The bends and pipe length need to be right to avoid rubbing on the caliper, hub or surrounding parts. The stainless braided kit avoids brake pipe flaring and hand bending, and it is better value than buying both later ANR5785 / ANR5786 formed metal pipes individually.
Left hand and right hand pipe positions
Left hand and right hand are based on the vehicle sides. On a UK right hand drive Defender, LH is the passenger side and RH is the driver’s side.
- ANR2947 — earlier LH front caliper metal pipe
- ANR2946 — earlier RH front caliper metal pipe
- ANR5785 — Td5-era LH front caliper metal pipe, replaced by the stainless braided kit
- ANR5786 — Td5-era RH front caliper metal pipe, replaced by the stainless braided kit
- SGB501790 — later LH front caliper metal pipe with male fittings at both ends
- SGB501800 — later RH front caliper metal pipe with male fittings at both ends
Check before ordering
Before ordering, compare your existing pipe fittings and pipe layout. Defender front caliper pipe arrangements changed over time, and the key difference is whether your pipe has male/female fittings or male/male fittings.
If your pipe has a male fitting at one end and a female fitting at the other, the stainless braided kit covers the ANR2946, ANR2947, ANR5785 and ANR5786 style front caliper hard pipes. If your pipe has male fittings at both ends, use SGB501790 or SGB501800 instead.
