The hole marking identifies the gasket thickness, but the numbers do not run in thickness order. Match a known-correct existing gasket for like-for-like replacement, or use piston protrusion measurement where the engine build or previous gasket choice is uncertain.

Choose the correct TD5 head gasket
All three gaskets fit Defender TD5 and Discovery 2 TD5 engines; the difference is gasket thickness. TD5 head gaskets are identified by holes in the visible gasket tab, with 2 hole being the thinnest, followed by 1 hole and then 3 hole.

Check gasket thickness before ordering
The workshop selection procedure uses the highest piston protrusion measured above the cylinder block face. On a known engine being rebuilt like for like, the visible gasket marking also provides a quick identification check.

Elring OEM TD5 head gaskets
All three thicknesses in this range are Elring OEM gaskets. A head gasket represents a relatively small part of the total cylinder-head job, so this is one area where we prefer to supply a known OEM-quality gasket rather than compromise on the sealing component itself.
