Discovery 2 front ball joint kits for replacing worn upper and lower joints across both sides of the front axle. The same press-fit ball joint arrangement is also used on Range Rover P38 models.

Compare component brands, seal specification and complete kit contents in the product grid. Individual product pages confirm exactly what is supplied, including whether the kit contains the four ball joints and two driveshaft oil seals normally required for a full front axle replacement.

Replacing Discovery 2 front axle ball joints

The upper and lower ball joints support the steering knuckle at each side of the front axle. Wear can cause steering play, knocking, creaking, poor self-centring, uneven tyre wear or excessive movement during an MOT inspection.

Both sides normally have the same mileage, age and working conditions. Replacing all four joints together avoids repeating the substantial axle dismantling and press work when the remaining joints develop wear.

Job Best place to start Check before ordering
Replace all front axle ball joints Complete front axle ball joint kit Confirm the kit includes two upper joints, two lower joints and two driveshaft oil seals
Replace joints on one worn side Compare complete both-side kits The opposite-side joints will normally have covered the same mileage and may already have similar wear
Rebuild an axle with previous ball joint replacements Ball joint kit and careful axle-yoke inspection Check for replacement paint marks, bore wear and firm press-fit resistance
Complete the front axle reassembly Ball joint kit, new driveshaft stake nuts and replacement boots where required Check the individual product pages for included seals, boots and fixings

Check the axle yokes before fitting new ball joints

Discovery 2 and Range Rover P38 front axle ball joints are pressed into machined bores in the axle yokes. Correct-size new joints should enter with firm, even resistance. A loose joint in an enlarged or damaged bore indicates axle-yoke wear rather than an undersized ball joint.

Land Rover workshop guidance states that each ball joint location should only be replaced up to three times, with a paint mark added after each replacement. On older axles, those marks may be missing or the previous replacement history may be unclear, so the bore condition must be checked before the new joint is pressed fully into place.

Vehicle fitment
These front axle ball joints fit Discovery 2 and Range Rover P38 models using the shared press-fit axle-yoke arrangement.
Complete axle contents
A full front axle replacement requires two upper joints, two lower joints and two driveshaft oil seals.
Axle-yoke condition
Check that each new joint has firm press-fit resistance before pressing it fully into the bore.
Alignment after replacement
Front wheel alignment should be checked and adjusted after the ball joints have been replaced.

Compare front ball joint kit specification
