Ashcroft Air Operated Locking Differential – Rover Diffs

Ashcroft air operated locking differential for Land Rover Rover diffs. This selectable locker gives full axle lock when engaged, sending drive to both wheels on the axle for maximum traction in difficult off-road conditions, while leaving the diff open for normal road use when switched off.

  • Fully locking selectable differential for 24 spline Rover diffs
  • Full 6mm locking collar engagement for strong positive lock-up
  • Static piston design to minimise the risk of air leaks
  • 4 pin diff centre with an all-steel selector cage
  • Supplied with front and rear switch fascias, solenoid, air line and fittings
  • Includes a pair of Timken journal bearings
  • Air compressor not included

This Ashcroft locker is for 24 spline Rover diffs only and is not available for 10 spline fitment.

Description

The Ashcroft air operated locking differential is the selectable full-lock option for Land Rover Rover diffs. Unlike the Ashcroft ATB, which works automatically as a torque biasing differential, this locker is switched on when full axle lock is needed. With the locker engaged, both wheels on the axle are driven together, giving maximum traction when one wheel is light, lifted or has lost grip.

For normal road driving the locker remains switched off and the differential works as an open diff. When the vehicle is off road and traction becomes the priority, the locker can be engaged to remove the normal left-to-right speed difference across the axle. This makes it a serious driveline upgrade for vehicles used in mud, rocks, cross-axle conditions, steep climbs, deep ruts and competition-style off-road work.

Ashcroft designed this locker around a pneumatic operating system with a static annular piston. The piston does not rotate in the cylinder, which removes one of the common air-leak problems associated with rotating seal designs. The locker also uses full 6mm locking collar engagement, a 4 pin diff centre and an all-steel selector cage for strong positive lock-up when the air supply is applied.

The unit is supplied with the parts needed for the locker installation, excluding the compressor. The kit includes front and rear switch fascias, solenoid, air line, required fittings and a pair of Timken journal bearings. The locker operates at 75–100 psi, so compressor pressure needs to be suitable for the locker air supply.

Fitment Notes

  • For Land Rover Rover diffs using 24 spline side gears
  • Fits Rover diff positions only
  • Not available for 10 spline fitment
  • Supplied with Timken journal bearings
  • Requires an air compressor, not included
  • Requires drilling and tapping the diff housing for the air feed pipe
  • Some high-pressure compressors may need a regulator or lower pressure cut-out switch
  • Not covered under warranty when used with fiddle brakes

The Ashcroft locker can be engaged when there is zero wheel-speed difference, such as at a standstill or while driving in a straight line. It should not be engaged while a wheel is spinning with a high speed difference across the axle. As with any fully locking differential, the driver needs to use it deliberately and switch it off again when full axle lock is no longer needed.

If the diff housing has previously been pegged using the older welded-plate method, the outside diameter of the locker may need machining to 162mm before fitting. Current pegged housings manufactured with additional material for pegging do not normally need this machining work.

Warranty

Buy with confidence: all new parts sold by Twinwoods 4x4 include at least 12 months manufacturer warranty against defects in materials and workmanship under normal use.

Some products and brands may include a longer warranty period where this is provided by the manufacturer. Where applicable, this will normally be stated on the individual product page or covered by the manufacturer’s own warranty terms.

Warranty cover applies to manufacturing defects. It does not cover misuse, incorrect fitting, competition use unless stated, contamination, modification, damage during installation, normal wear and tear, or failure caused by an unrelated vehicle fault. For certain components, proof of professional fitment may be required.

Warranty claims may require the part to be returned for inspection and/or supplier testing before the claim is accepted. Any advance replacement is discretionary.

Warranty remedies relate to the part itself, meaning repair or replacement, or refund if those are not possible. Warranty does not cover labour, removal or refitting, diagnostics, consumables, travel or other incidental costs.

This warranty is in addition to your legal rights and does not reduce those rights.
