Ashcroft Automatic Torque Biasing Differential – Rover Diffs
Ashcroft Automatic Torque Biasing Differential for Rover type diffs. The Ashcroft ATB is a fully automatic traction upgrade that works with no driver input, while remaining transparent in normal road use.
- Improves traction when one wheel loses grip by biasing torque across the axle
- Fully automatic operation with no switches or driver input
- Transparent on road, with no unwanted harshness in normal driving
- Only comes into play when there is a wheel-speed difference across the axle
- Enhances Land Rover traction control by multiplying the braking load created by the system
- Helical gear design with no adjustment needed as the gears compensate for wear
- Only suitable for 24 spline Rover type diffs
This Ashcroft ATB is for Rover type diff fitment only and is not suitable for Salisbury/Wolf/P38 axles.

The Ashcroft Automatic Torque Biasing Differential is a serious traction upgrade for Rover type diffs. It replaces the standard open diff centre and automatically biases torque across the axle when one wheel starts to lose grip. On the road it remains transparent, so the vehicle still drives normally without the harshness of a locked differential or the driver involvement of a selectable locker.
The Ashcroft ATB comes into play when there is a wheel-speed difference across the axle. In normal driving, it allows the left and right wheels to rotate at different speeds as usual. When traction is lost on one side, the helical gear design biases drive towards the wheel with more grip. This makes it a great upgrade for mixed road and off-road Land Rovers used on wet grass, mud, snow, sand, loose climbs, towing sites, green lanes and slippery tracks.
For vehicles with Land Rover traction control, the ATB works with the braking effect created by the traction control system. Instead of the traction control simply braking a spinning wheel, the ATB multiplies that braking load through the diff and sends more drive to the wheel with grip. This makes the standard traction control system work harder and more effectively.
The helical gear design also avoids the normal compromises of a plate-type limited slip differential. There are no clutch plates to preload and no adjustment needed as the unit wears, because the gears compensate for wear during use. We recommend good-quality EP80/90 oil and do not recommend friction additives or modifiers.
Fitment Notes
- For Rover type diffs using 24 spline side gears and metric casing/bearings
- Can be fitted to the front or rear Rover diff position
- Not suitable for Salisbury axles
- Matching journal bearings are RTC3095
- Vehicles fitted with a torque biasing differential should not be brake tested on rollers; use a decelerometer instead
Front axle fitment can give slightly stronger steering self-centre when coming out of a corner, especially when first fitted, but this normally reduces as the ATB beds in. Rear axle fitment is normally not noticeable in everyday road driving until extra traction is needed.
If the diff housing has previously been pegged using the older welded-plate method, the outside diameter of the ATB may need machining to 162mm before fitting. Current pegged housings manufactured with additional material for pegging do not normally need this machining work.

Buy with confidence: all new parts sold by Twinwoods 4x4 include at least 12 months manufacturer warranty against defects in materials and workmanship under normal use.
Some products and brands may include a longer warranty period where this is provided by the manufacturer. Where applicable, this will normally be stated on the individual product page or covered by the manufacturer’s own warranty terms.
Warranty cover applies to manufacturing defects. It does not cover misuse, incorrect fitting, competition use unless stated, contamination, modification, damage during installation, normal wear and tear, or failure caused by an unrelated vehicle fault. For certain components, proof of professional fitment may be required.
Warranty claims may require the part to be returned for inspection and/or supplier testing before the claim is accepted. Any advance replacement is discretionary.
Warranty remedies relate to the part itself, meaning repair or replacement, or refund if those are not possible. Warranty does not cover labour, removal or refitting, diagnostics, consumables, travel or other incidental costs.
