Why change the ZF 4HP22 transmission filter?
The ZF 4HP22 automatic gearbox used in Defender, Discovery and Range Rover Classic works hard – especially on towing and off-road vehicles. Over time the internal oil filter and sump gasket can become contaminated, leading to:
- Sluggish or harsh gear changes
- Contaminated ATF and metallic debris in the sump
- Increased wear on clutches and bands
- Risk of aeration or low line pressure under heavy use
If you’re changing the ATF in your ZF 4HP22, it makes sense to replace the filter and gasket at the same time so you’re not pouring fresh oil through a tired, partially blocked screen.

Fitting notes
- Always work safely: support the vehicle securely and wear eye protection when working under the car.
- Warm the transmission slightly before draining to help the old ATF flow out.
- Clean the sump pan thoroughly and check for excessive metallic debris before refitting.
- Replace the filter, O-rings and sump gasket, then torque the pan bolts evenly to spec – do not overtighten.
- Refill with the correct ATF (such as our recommended Ravenol ATF 5/4 HP for Discovery 2 ZF 4HP22) and set the fluid level following the manufacturer procedure.

Warranty claims may require the part to be returned for inspection and testing before any repair, replacement or refund is authorised.
