Propshaft universal joints and servicing parts for Defender, Discovery 1, Discovery 2, Range Rover Classic, Range Rover P38 and selected Series models, including 75mm, 82mm and 95mm UJs, Discovery 2 double-cardan repair parts, grease and a grease gun.

Published vehicle and VIN fitment should be treated as a starting point rather than the final check. Land Rover propshafts are regularly replaced, rebuilt or swapped during the vehicle’s life, so identify the front or rear propshaft and measure the universal joint before ordering. Check both the overall span across the bearing cups and the bearing-cap diameter; joints commonly described as 75mm, 82mm and 95mm are not interchangeable.

Find the right propshaft universal joint

Universal joints must match the propshaft actually fitted, not simply the vehicle model, year or VIN. Measure the complete span across the bearing cups, confirm the bearing-cap diameter and identify the front or rear propshaft before comparing the available replacement, OE-quality, GKN and Hardy Spicer joints. The measurement is the final check, even where published vehicle fitment appears clear.

Job Best place to start Check before ordering
Replace a common 75mm propshaft UJ Standard greaseable or GKN Hardy Spicer heavy-duty universal joints replacing TVC100010, RTC4587 and RTC3458 Confirm an approximately 74.6mm span, 27mm bearing-cap diameter and the position of the propshaft being repaired
Replace an 82mm propshaft UJ Hardy Spicer universal joint replacing RTC3346 Confirm that the joint measures approximately 82mm across the cups and matches the existing propshaft joint
Repair a Defender TD5 front propshaft STC4807 greaseable, OE-quality or GKN universal joints These joints are commonly called 95mm but measure approximately 92.1mm across the cups with 27mm bearing caps
Repair a Discovery 2 front double-cardan propshaft Complete GKN repair kit or separate double-cardan ball-seat repair kit Check whether the universal joints, centre ball-seat assembly or both require replacement
Lubricate greaseable propshaft joints Propshaft grease and a cartridge grease gun Confirm that grease nipples are fitted and lubricate the universal joints and sliding sections at the required service intervals

Check universal joint fitment before ordering

Vehicle, year and VIN information can help narrow the choice, but it cannot confirm which propshaft is still fitted to an older Land Rover. Replacement propshafts, rebuilt shafts and conversions may use a different universal joint from the original factory specification.

Vehicle and VIN fitment
Use published vehicle and VIN breaks as a guide only. A replacement, rebuilt or modified propshaft may use a different joint from the vehicle’s original specification.
Measure across the cups
Measure the complete span from the outside face of one bearing cup to the outside face of the opposite cup. Do not rely on the nominal 75mm, 82mm or 95mm description alone.
Check the bearing-cap diameter
The overall span is not the only measurement. Confirm the bearing-cap diameter where dimensions are supplied, particularly with the common 75mm and STC4807 joints.
Propshaft position and joint layout
Identify the front or rear propshaft and check whether it uses a single UJ or a double-cardan assembly. The Discovery 2 front propshaft uses two UJs and a separate centre ball-seat assembly at the transfer-box end.

Universal joint brands and quality levels

The available joints include selected greaseable replacements, OE-quality parts and GKN or Hardy Spicer branded UJs. Some Hardy Spicer universal joints are also marked GKN or described as GKN Hardy Spicer because Hardy Spicer became part of GKN’s driveline business.

Compare the part number, dimensions, propshaft position and stated manufacturer rather than selecting by vehicle description, price or nominal size alone.

Product type How it is shown on Twinwoods 4x4
GKN or Hardy Spicer universal joint Branded universal joints are identified by the stated manufacturer and supplied for the dimensions, part number and propshaft fitment shown on the product page.
OE-quality universal joint OE-quality wording is used where the supplied product information supports that quality level.
Selected greaseable replacement Greaseable replacement joints provide the stated dimensional and part-number fitment without an unsupported OE or OEM claim.
Heavy-duty universal joint The heavy-duty 75mm joint is identified separately where its construction differs from the standard greaseable replacement.
Double-cardan repair parts Discovery 2 repair products identify whether the universal joints, centre ball-seat parts or the complete repair set are included.
