Find the correct TD5 auxiliary drive belt
There is no single auxiliary belt for every TD5. Defender belt selection is determined by air-conditioning fitment, while Discovery 2 also splits according to whether the vehicle has Active Cornering Enhancement. Match the vehicle equipment first, then use the Land Rover reference and 7PK belt size as confirmation.

What does the TD5 auxiliary belt drive?
The auxiliary belt transfers drive from the crankshaft to several important components at the front of the TD5 engine. The exact layout depends on the vehicle specification, but one belt can be responsible for charging, power steering assistance, coolant circulation, cooling-fan drive and several other systems.

How TD5 auxiliary belts fail
Heat, age and repeated flexing gradually harden the belt material. Cracks, splits, glazing, frayed edges, missing rib sections and oil contamination all show that the belt is approaching the end of its service life.
The belt itself is not always the original cause of failure. A worn tensioner, rough pulley bearing, damaged pulley or poor belt alignment can make the belt wander, squeal, lose ribs, shred or come off completely. Check the complete drive before fitting another belt.
Why carry a spare TD5 auxiliary belt?
A correctly sized spare belt takes very little room in the vehicle but can prevent a straightforward belt failure from ending in recovery. Loss of one belt affects several essential systems at once, and continuing to drive without coolant circulation, power steering assistance or battery charging is not realistic.
There are four different TD5 belt lengths, so the spare must match the vehicle’s air-conditioning and ACE layout. A spare belt will not solve a seized pulley or failed tensioner; check that the driven components turn freely and that the tensioner remains serviceable before fitting it.

Inspect the complete TD5 auxiliary drive
Check the automatic tensioner for excessive movement, poor alignment or a weak spring, and inspect every pulley for roughness, free play or signs that the belt has been running against an edge. Oil leaks should also be dealt with before they contaminate the replacement belt.
