TD5 Engine Oils
TD5 engine oils for Defender and Discovery 2, including 5W-30 oils in the handbook viscosity grade, our recommended Ravenol VMO 5W-40 and Ravenol RUP 5W-40 for VNT engines producing 250 bhp or more.
All of the oils shown are suitable for TD5 engines. Ravenol VMO is our main recommendation for standard, remapped, towing and hard-working road vehicles, while RUP is reserved for highly tuned VNT builds operating well beyond standard TD5 output.

5W-30, Ravenol VMO or Ravenol RUP?
5W-30 is the viscosity stated in the Land Rover handbook and remains suitable for standard Defender TD5 and Discovery 2 TD5 servicing. The 5W-30 oils shown provide straightforward service choices for owners following the original viscosity grade.
Ravenol VMO 5W-40 is our main TD5 recommendation. It includes VW 505.01 among its manufacturer recommendations and is our preferred oil for standard and remapped engines, towing, off-road use and TD5 vehicles regularly subjected to sustained load.
Ravenol RUP 5W-40 is intended for the extreme end of TD5 tuning: VNT-equipped engines producing around 250 bhp or more. It is aimed at engines and turbochargers operating under substantially greater boost, temperature and mechanical load, rather than ordinary TD5 road servicing.

The inclusion of VMO and RUP does not make the handbook-grade 5W-30 oils unsuitable. The distinction is the level of recommendation: 5W-30 for conventional servicing, VMO as our preferred oil for most TD5 engines, and RUP for highly tuned 250 bhp-plus VNT builds.
Oil quantity and TD5 servicing
A complete TD5 oil and filter change requires more than one 5-litre container. Order sufficient oil for the complete service fill, or use a service kit supplied with the required oil and filters.
