The pump assembly sits inside the fuel tank and includes the fuel level sender unit. Defender 90, Defender 110/130 and Discovery 2 use different pump and sender assemblies, so the correct pump depends on the vehicle and tank layout rather than the Td5 engine alone.

Why the correct Td5 fuel pump matters

Defender 90, Defender 110/130 and Discovery 2 Td5 fuel pump assemblies will physically fit and run the engine, but the fuel level sender differs between vehicles. For normal replacement, choose the pump that matches the vehicle so the fuel gauge reads correctly.

This also explains why a Td5 fuel gauge can be consistently wrong after a previous pump replacement: the vehicle may already have the wrong pump and sender assembly fitted.

In an emergency, a different Td5 pump assembly can be fitted to get the vehicle running again. For example, if a Discovery 2 pump fails and the only spare available is for a Defender 90, the Defender pump can be used to continue the journey, but the fuel gauge reading will not be accurate until the correct Discovery 2 pump is fitted.

Hella or VDO / Continental Td5 fuel pump?

VDO / Continental is the OEM premium option in the Td5 fuel pump range. Hella is a trusted branded replacement option where you want a good-quality pump assembly without moving up to the VDO / Continental version.

A weak or failing Td5 fuel pump can cause noisy pump operation, poor starting, weak fuel delivery, uneven running or fuel gauge problems. The pump is not always the only possible cause of a Td5 fuel-system fault, so it is also worth checking the fuel filter, fuel filter housing and air bleed valve where symptoms are unclear.
