Find the right TD5 fuel pump
TD5 fuel pumps are selected by vehicle and fuel tank rather than by engine alone. Defender 90, Defender 110/130 and Discovery 2 use different pump and fuel-level sender assemblies, so start with the correct WFX reference before deciding between Hella and VDO/Continental.

Hella or VDO/Continental TD5 fuel pump?
A lot of TD5 advice says to fit VDO because poor-quality aftermarket pumps have developed a bad reputation. That advice is understandable, but it does not mean every non-VDO fuel pump belongs in the same category. The Hella pumps we stock are high-quality branded assemblies from a major automotive manufacturer with extensive OE electronics experience, and are our normal recommendation for most TD5 fuel pump replacements.
Hella specifically emphasises parts quality, functional reliability, low-noise operation and long service life across its fuel-pump range. These pumps are a very different proposition from the anonymous low-cost replacements responsible for much of the poor reputation surrounding aftermarket TD5 fuel pumps.
VDO/Continental remains the OEM choice and has the established long-term record on TD5 models. Original VDO pumps are well known for remaining in service for 20 years or more. Hella TD5 replacements have not been around for long enough to make the same 20-year comparison, so VDO still has the advantage of proven long-term history rather than an assumption that Hella is a lesser-quality pump.

Before replacing a TD5 fuel pump
Loud or unusual pump noise, difficult starting, low fuel pressure, uneven running or cutting out under load can indicate a weak pump, but those symptoms do not confirm pump failure on their own. The fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator, injector washers and seals, filter housing, pipework and electrical supply can also cause TD5 fuel-delivery problems, so physical fuel-pressure testing is worthwhile where the diagnosis remains uncertain.
