The Essential 300TDI Cambelt Modification Explained
Early 2.5L 300TDI diesel engines suffered from a notorious design quirk where the cambelt could migrate forward, rubbing against the front housing and fraying its edges. Land Rover addressed this by introducing a modified timing setup featuring a flanged crankshaft pulley and a revised idler design. This comprehensive 300TDI timing belt kit (STC4096LG) acts as a complete conversion kit for early engines, upgrading them to the trouble-free later configuration, whilst serving as a direct premium replacement for later-production powerplants.
Critical Installation Fitment Note
When carrying out a timing belt change on early-type 300TDI engines, you must locate and remove the original, separate spacer washer from the mounting stud on the timing housing before installation. The premium INA idler pulley included in this kit features an integrated spacer built directly into the rear of the bearing assembly. Leaving the old factory washer on the mounting stud will cause severe pulley misalignment, throwing out the belt path and leading to immediate tracking faults. In practice, while the vast majority of original factory idlers are long gone by now, it is always worth verifying this on the vehicle before fitting the new components.
Recommended Companion Components
To ensure a completely fluid-tight seal and safe reassembly during your cambelt maintenance, we highly recommend replacing the single-use hardware. Be sure to check your stock of the vital 300TDI crankshaft pulley bolt (ERR5087), the companion 300TDI crankshaft pulley O-ring (ERR4710), and the 300TDI front cover sealing washer (ERR2344) to complete the job properly.
