Ravenol ATF 5/4HP Transmission Fluid – Discovery 2 ZF 4HP22

The ZF 4HP22 automatic gearbox in the Discovery 2 is very sensitive to oil quality. Using the correct, manufacturer-approved automatic transmission fluid makes a big difference to shift quality, gearbox life and how happy the transmission is when towing or off-road.

RAVENOL ATF 5/4 HP is a high-quality fluid blended specifically for ZF 4- and 5-speed autos, including the 4HP22 used in Discovery 2. It’s the oil we actually use in the workshop – not a cheap “universal” ATF.

Notes

• Always check and set the fluid level with the gearbox at the correct ZF procedure temperature.
• If the old oil is very dark or smells burnt, plan on doing more than one change (drain, refill, drive, repeat) rather than a single drain and fill.
• Use a new sump/filter and the correct gasket or bolts – poor filtration can be just as harmful as old oil.

How much do oil you need?

• For a proper “dry fill” you’ll need just under 10 litres
• For a normal service (drain and refill) you’ll usually need 5-6 litres since you cannot drain all the oil out of the torque converter.

RAVENOL ATF 5/4 HP Transmission Fluid is an automatic transmission fluid (ATF) produced with synthetic PAO base oils together with carefully selected additives and inhibitors. This combination provides a stable, smooth and reliable shift quality in modern 4- and 5-speed ZF automatic transmissions.

It is primarily designed for ZF 4HP-series and 5HP-series gearboxes and is suitable for many applications in passenger cars and light commercial vehicles from manufacturers such as BMW, Jaguar, Land Rover and others where this specification is called for.
