Replacement LT230 transmission handbrake drum
LR189057 is the replacement LT230 transmission handbrake drum used on Land Rover Defender, Discovery 1, Discovery 2 and Range Rover Classic models with the drum-type transmission brake. The drum fits to the rear output side of the LT230 transfer box, where the Land Rover handbrake acts on the transmission rather than directly on the wheel brakes.
Replace the drum if the braking surface is badly scored, rusted, distorted or contaminated with oil from the rear output seal. A worn or contaminated drum can cause a weak, grabby or uneven handbrake, even if the cable and adjuster are working correctly.
When fitting a new drum, check the condition of the shoes, springs, adjuster, expander/lever mechanism and rear output oil seal. Oil inside the transmission brake usually needs to be dealt with before fitting new shoes, otherwise the new parts can become contaminated again.
