Td5 glow plug set for Defender and Discovery 2
These Beru GN985 glow plugs fit Land Rover Td5 engines in Defender and Discovery 2 models. Supplied as a set of 4, they are the correct quantity for renewing the engine set and replace Land Rover part number ERR6066.
The Td5 engine will often start even with weak glow plugs, but they are still part of the cold-start and early running strategy. Good glow plugs help with smoother cold starts, cleaner initial running and correct preheat / after-glow operation while the engine comes up to temperature.
Beru GN985 is the Beru reference for this Td5 glow plug. The plugs use an 11V after-glow capable design and are suitable for the Td5 glow plug control system.

Do I need glow plugs in a Td5 used in the UK?
There are mixed opinions on this, with some suggesting Td5 glow plugs aren’t needed at all. While the engine may start even in cold weather, Td5 glow plugs are not just for starting. They continue to operate until the coolant reaches around 20°C, which can take several minutes, ensuring optimum combustion and smooth running.
Why not just fit some cheap glow plugs?
Because Td5 glow plugs operate until the coolant reaches 20°C (often several minutes), they need to withstand continuous operation. Cheap glow plugs simply can’t cope, leading to early failure and poor engine performance. OEM Beru plugs (ERR6066G) are designed to last.
My glow plug light always goes out after a few seconds
The Td5 glow plug dash light is controlled by the ECU/BCU and isn’t directly linked to plug operation like on older Land Rovers. The glow plugs continue running until coolant temperature reaches 20°C, ensuring reliable starting and complete combustion.
