Ravenol MZG 80W-90 GL-4 LT230 Transfer Box Oil – 1L
Ravenol MZG 80W-90 GL-4 gear oil for LT230 transfer boxes in Defender, Discovery 1, Discovery 2 and Range Rover Classic models. GL-4 matters here: the LT230 contains yellow-metal components, and a generic GL-5 axle oil is not the correct substitute.
- Recommended for Land Rover LT230 transfer box servicing
- SAE 80W-90 mineral EP gear oil meeting API GL-4 and MIL-L-2105 D
- Protects the gears without the aggressive GL-5 additive level that can attack brass and other yellow metals
- 1L bottle – Ravenol article number 1223105-001
GL-5 is not an upgrade from GL-4 for the LT230. Use MZG in the transfer box and reserve 80W-90 GL-5 oil for standard Rover differentials.

Ravenol MZG SAE 80W-90 GL-4 is our recommended oil for the Land Rover LT230 transfer box. This mineral extreme-pressure gear oil combines the correct 80W-90 viscosity with the API GL-4 specification needed for the LT230, providing a pressure-resistant lubricating film, wear protection and oxidation stability without treating GL-5 as a supposedly better substitute. Supplied in a 1L bottle.
Why We Recommend Ravenol MZG for the LT230
The GL number is not simply a quality ranking. GL-5 axle oils use a different and generally stronger extreme-pressure additive system for heavily loaded hypoid differential gears. That additive chemistry can attack brass and other yellow-metal components, making a generic GL-5 differential oil unsuitable for an LT230 merely because it also carries an 80W-90 viscosity grade.
Ravenol MZG is a dedicated API GL-4 oil with good load-carrying capacity, anti-wear protection, stable viscosity across operating temperatures and resistance to foaming. Ravenol also describes the formulation as neutral to metals and sealants, making it properly matched to the transfer box rather than selected from viscosity alone.
Vehicle and Transfer Box Use
- Defender models fitted with the LT230 transfer box
- Discovery 1 models fitted with the LT230 transfer box
- Discovery 2 LT230 transfer boxes
- Range Rover Classic models fitted with the LT230 transfer box
Use Ravenol MZG for the LT230 transfer box. Standard Rover differentials require GL-5 oil, while manual gearboxes such as the R380 use their own specified gearbox fluid. The vehicle may therefore require several different oils across the gearbox, transfer box and axles.
