Ravenol RHP Racing High Performance Gear SAE 75W-90 sits at the top of our differential-oil range for traditional Land Rover axles. Developed as a PAO-based fully synthetic racing gear oil with Ravenol USVO technology, RHP combines exceptional viscosity stability with high load-carrying capacity, excellent EP wear protection, outstanding shear stability and low foaming. Ravenol specifically formulates RHP with limited-slip properties and recommends it for highly loaded rear axles with integrated locking differentials; Twinwoods stocks it as a premium differential oil for Defender, Discovery 1 and Discovery 2 axles, including standard open differentials and compatible locking or limited-slip units.
Why RHP Works So Well in a Land Rover Differential
75W-90 can sound like a thinner modern oil compared with the traditional 80W-90 normally associated with Land Rover axles, but the actual viscosity data tells a very different story. RHP measures 92.6 mm²/s at 40°C and 16.1 mm²/s at 100°C, with a viscosity index of 188. Ravenol EPX mineral 80W-90 measures 130.3 mm²/s at 40°C but 14.3 mm²/s at 100°C, with a viscosity index of 108.
RHP is considerably less viscous while the axle is warming up, yet is actually more viscous at 100°C. That is probably the clearest demonstration of what its PAO and USVO formulation achieves. The oil does not need to be extremely heavy at lower temperatures simply to retain substantial SAE 90 viscosity once the differential becomes hot.
A viscosity index of 188 is exceptionally high for a gear oil and explains how RHP can combine much better cold flow with substantial SAE 90 viscosity when hot. RHP remains more viscous than EPX at 100°C, while Ravenol separately specifies high load-carrying capacity and a high-pressure-stable lubricating film under high oil temperatures and loads. Those are related advantages, but they are not the same claim: viscosity-temperature stability comes from the measurable viscosity data, while load and film performance are part of Ravenol’s stated formulation characteristics.

The Brookfield figures are measured at different temperatures, so they are not a direct numerical comparison. What they do show is the exceptional low-temperature behaviour of RHP: it remains highly fluid even at a test temperature 14°C lower than that used for the conventional mineral 80W-90.
High-Load Protection Without Sacrificing Cold Flow
A Land Rover differential needs far more than the correct nominal viscosity. The hypoid gears operate under high sliding loads, while the crownwheel constantly churns the oil and the complete axle can become very hot during prolonged hard use. Ravenol specifies RHP for a high-pressure-stable lubricating film at high oil temperatures and loads, together with outstanding shear stability, excellent thermal stability, excellent EP properties, high load-carrying capacity and very good wear protection.
That combination is what makes RHP particularly interesting for a Land Rover. It flows far more readily at low temperatures than a conventional mineral 80W-90, maintains exceptional viscosity stability as temperature rises, and is separately formulated to cope with the pressure, shear and heat generated inside highly loaded differentials.
The foam-control data is equally strong. ASTM D892 results are 0/0, 10/0 and 0/0 through the three test sequences, with no foam remaining after settling. That matters in a differential where the rotating crownwheel is continuously agitating the lubricant and the oil needs to remain consistent rather than becoming heavily aerated.
RHP also records a 1b copper-strip corrosion result at 121°C. Ravenol states good compatibility with non-ferrous metals and sealing materials, alongside strong ageing and oxidation resistance. The result is a racing-derived oil whose advantages for a Land Rover differential can be seen in the published engineering data rather than relying on motorsport branding alone.

Conventional mineral EP gear oil remains entirely suitable for routine Land Rover differential servicing. RHP goes considerably further: a PAO full-synthetic oil with markedly better viscosity-temperature stability, exceptional cold-flow behaviour and a formulation developed specifically around high loads, shear stability, EP protection and temperature control.

We use Ravenol because the range lets us select the lubricant around the actual engine, gearbox, axle or hydraulic system rather than relying on viscosity alone. The result is a deliberately selected Land Rover range in which every product has a defined job, from TD5 engine oil and R380 MTF-94 to specialist ZF ATF, LT230 oil, limited-slip differential oil and later transfer-box fluids.

More than the correct number on the bottle
Two oils carrying the same viscosity grade can be very different products. Base oil, additive chemistry, volatility, viscosity stability, friction characteristics and manufacturer specifications all affect how a lubricant behaves once it is hot and working inside the component.
That is particularly important with Land Rovers. An R380 gearbox, LT230 transfer box, Rover differential, ZF automatic gearbox and electronically controlled later transfer box all place different demands on their lubricant. We select the Ravenol product around the component itself rather than simply finding the nearest familiar viscosity.
Ravenol engine oil
Our Ravenol engine-oil range runs from traditional oils for 200TDI, 300TDI and classic petrol engines through to specialist oils for TD5, Defender Puma TDCI and later Land Rover engines. Ravenol VMO 5W-40 remains our main TD5 recommendation, RUP 5W-40 covers very highly tuned TD5 engines, Turbo-C HDC 15W-40 is our preferred oil for standard 200TDI and 300TDI engines, while FO, FLJ, VMP and SFE cover the relevant later engine and emissions-system requirements.
