RAVENOL LS 80W-90 is a mineral hypoid gear oil with limited-slip friction characteristics, developed for differentials working under high loads and requiring SAE 80W-90 GL-5 lubricant. For Land Rover use, its main role is as the dedicated 80W-90 oil for compatible limited-slip differentials, while remaining fully suitable for conventional Rover axles where 80W-90 API GL-5 is specified.
80W-90 Oil for Limited-Slip Differentials
Plate-type limited-slip differentials can depend on the correct friction behaviour as well as the extreme-pressure protection required by the crown wheel and pinion. RAVENOL LS combines those limited-slip characteristics with a pressure-resistant lubricating film, strong wear protection, oxidation resistance and good adhesion to heavily loaded gear surfaces.
The presence of an upgraded differential does not automatically mean LS oil is required. ATB, helical and locking differentials can have different lubrication requirements, so the differential manufacturer’s specification remains the deciding factor. Where an 80W-90 limited-slip oil is specified, RAVENOL LS 80W-90 has a clear role in the range.
Standard Rover Differentials
RAVENOL LS 80W-90 can also be used in standard open Rover differentials requiring an 80W-90 GL-5 axle oil. For normal open-differential servicing, RAVENOL EPX 80W-90 GL-5 remains our straightforward conventional differential oil, while LS 80W-90 earns its place where limited-slip friction characteristics are specifically required.

Brand
Ravenol
Ravenol is our main lubricant brand for Land Rover servicing, covering engine oils, manual and automatic gearboxes, transfer boxes, differentials, ACE and power steering, brake fluid, coolant, grease and specialist workshop fluids.
We use Ravenol because the range lets us select the lubricant around the actual engine, gearbox, axle or hydraulic system rather than relying on viscosity alone. The result is a deliberately selected Land Rover range in which every product has a defined job, from TD5 engine oil and R380 MTF-94 to specialist ZF ATF, LT230 oil, limited-slip differential oil and later transfer-box fluids.
Why Twinwoods partners with Ravenol
Ravenol is a genuine German lubricant manufacturer, developing and producing its oils, fluids and greases in Germany. The range is backed by unusually detailed technical data, which matters to us because lubricant choice should be based on much more than the viscosity printed on the bottle.
We use Ravenol in our service kits, recommend it for the Land Rovers we specialise in and use it in vehicles we work on ourselves. More importantly, the range gives us properly specialised products for different engines, gearboxes, transfer boxes, axles and hydraulic systems rather than trying to make one generic lubricant cover everything.
Ravenol oils and fluids for Land Rover
| System | Ravenol products | What matters |
|---|---|---|
| Engine oil | VMO, RUP, Turbo-C HDC, TSi, FO, FLJ, VMP, SFE and Formel Extra | Engine, viscosity, specification, emissions equipment and how the vehicle is used |
| Manual gearboxes | MTF-2 / MTF-94 for the R380 and VSG 75W-90 for the Defender Puma MT82 | Gearbox type and complete lubricant specification rather than viscosity alone |
| Automatic gearboxes | ATF 5/4 HP and ATF Dexron III H | ATF 5/4 HP is our specialist choice for the Discovery 2 ZF 4HP gearbox, while Dexron III H covers compatible general ATF duties |
| Transfer boxes | MZG 80W-90 and VSG 75W-90 for the LT230, plus DTF-1 for compatible later active transfer boxes | Transfer box design and the fluid specification required by that particular unit |
| Axles and differentials | EPX 80W-90, VSG 75W-90, RHP 75W-90, LS 75W-90 and LS 80W-90 | Standard, ATB or limited-slip differential design together with the required viscosity and friction characteristics |
| ACE and power steering | SSF and ATF Dexron III H | Hydraulic system and the correct fluid specification |
| Brakes and clutch | DOT 4 LV and DOT 4 | DOT 4 LV is our main brake and clutch fluid, with conventional DOT 4 retained where appropriate |
| Cooling systems | C12+ OAT and C12evo Si-OAT coolant concentrates | Coolant technology, engine and the fluid already in the cooling system |
| Grease | MoS2 Multi-Purpose Grease, LI-86 Bearing & Propshaft Grease and HRG 2 Hot Red Grease | MoS2 for broad workshop and driveline use, LI-86 for bearings and universal joints, and HRG 2 for high-temperature grease duties |
| Workshop fluids | Professional Engine Cleaner and Winter Screenwash Concentrate | Purpose-specific maintenance products alongside the main lubricant range |
More than the correct number on the bottle
Two oils carrying the same viscosity grade can be very different products. Base oil, additive chemistry, volatility, viscosity stability, friction characteristics and manufacturer specifications all affect how a lubricant behaves once it is hot and working inside the component.
That is particularly important with Land Rovers. An R380 gearbox, LT230 transfer box, Rover differential, ZF automatic gearbox and electronically controlled later transfer box all place different demands on their lubricant. We select the Ravenol product around the component itself rather than simply finding the nearest familiar viscosity.
Ravenol engine oil
Our Ravenol engine-oil range runs from traditional oils for 200TDI, 300TDI and classic petrol engines through to specialist oils for TD5, Defender Puma TDCI and later Land Rover engines. Ravenol VMO 5W-40 remains our main TD5 recommendation, RUP 5W-40 covers very highly tuned TD5 engines, Turbo-C HDC 15W-40 is our preferred oil for standard 200TDI and 300TDI engines, while FO, FLJ, VMP and SFE cover the relevant later engine and emissions-system requirements.

Returns – quick FAQs
How long do I have to return an item?
Who pays return carriage?
What condition must a change-of-mind return be in?
Fitting, attempted fitting, contamination, damage, missing packaging or excessive handling can substantially reduce the value of the goods and may result in a corresponding reduction to your refund.
Can I fit a part and then return it?
Once a part has been fitted or an attempt has been made to fit it, it may be marked, contaminated, damaged or otherwise unsuitable for resale as a new part. We do not operate a used-parts or bargain-bin section, so a fitted or damaged part can have very little resale value.
Where your handling has reduced the value of the goods beyond what is reasonably necessary to inspect them, your refund may be reduced to reflect that loss in value.
What if the item is faulty?
Are any items excluded from change-of-mind returns?
How do I start a return?
Please include your order number and a brief reason for the return. Do not send anything back until you have received the appropriate return instructions.
Buy with confidence: all new parts sold by Twinwoods 4x4 include at least 12 months manufacturer warranty against defects in materials and workmanship under normal use.
Some products and brands may include a longer warranty period where this is provided by the manufacturer. Where applicable, this will normally be stated on the individual product page or covered by the manufacturer’s own warranty terms.
Warranty cover applies to manufacturing defects. It does not cover misuse, incorrect fitting, competition use unless stated, contamination, modification, damage during installation, normal wear and tear, or failure caused by an unrelated vehicle fault. For certain components, proof of professional fitment may be required.
Warranty claims may require the part to be returned for inspection and/or supplier testing before the claim is accepted. Any advance replacement is discretionary.
Warranty remedies relate to the part itself, meaning repair or replacement, or refund if those are not possible. Warranty does not cover labour, removal or refitting, diagnostics, consumables, travel or other incidental costs.
This warranty is in addition to your legal rights and does not reduce those rights.
