Ravenol VSG SAE 75W-90 is a fully synthetic transmission oil selected primarily for the Defender Puma MT82 six-speed manual gearbox. Ravenol names the MT82 as a supported gearbox and includes Land Rover TYK500010 in its manufacturer recommendations. Its API GL-4 / GL-5 classification and axle-drive suitability also make it a strong fully synthetic 75W-90 oil for standard Rover differentials.
Why We Recommend Ravenol VSG for the MT82
VSG is not simply a generic axle-only GL-5 oil. Ravenol formulates it for synchronised and non-synchronised manual gearboxes requiring API GL-4 or GL-5 and states good compatibility with non-ferrous metals. The combined GL rating is therefore suitable for the MT82 gearbox rather than being an axle-oil specification alone.
Excellent cold-flow performance helps the oil circulate during cold starts, while high shear stability and a stable lubricating film protect the gearbox as temperatures and loads rise. These properties make VSG particularly well matched to hard-working Defender Puma gearboxes.
Three 1L bottles provide enough oil for a Defender MT82 gearbox oil change. The correct service quantity should be measured into the gearbox rather than treating the filler opening as an overflow level.
VSG can also be used in standard Rover front and rear differentials requiring fully synthetic SAE 75W-90 API GL-5 oil. Aftermarket limited-slip and ATB differentials should be matched to the differential manufacturer’s oil requirement; see our ATB and LSD differential oils where a specialist fluid is required.
