Choosing the right gear oil
Land Rover drivetrain oils should be selected according to the gearbox, transfer box or differential fitted. The same vehicle may require MTF-94 in its manual gearbox, a completely different lubricant in the LT230 transfer box and an EP gear oil in its axles.

Understanding gear oil specifications
SAE viscosity grades such as 75W-80, 75W-90 and 80W-90 describe how an oil behaves at different temperatures. API GL-4 and GL-5 classifications describe different gear lubricant performance requirements, but neither viscosity nor GL classification alone confirms that an oil is correct for a particular transmission.
For example, Twinwoods recommends Ravenol MZG 80W-90 as a traditional mineral LT230 lubricant and Ravenol VSG 75W-90 as a fully synthetic alternative. R380 manual gearboxes instead require an MTF-94-type fluid. The specification and complete lubricant formulation must match the component being serviced.

Conventional open differentials, ATB units and plate-type limited-slip differentials do not necessarily require the same oil. Follow the manufacturer's specification for upgraded units.

Match the complete specification
Check viscosity, API GL classification and any required manufacturer fluid reference. Oils sharing a viscosity grade are not automatically interchangeable.
