5W-30 Engine Oil
5W-30 engine oil for standard TD5 servicing, Defender 2.4 and 2.2 TDCI Puma engines, Range Rover L322 TD6 M57 and later DPF-equipped Land Rover models.
Start with the exact oil specification required by the engine, then check the ACEA classification, manufacturer approval, emissions-system compatibility and bottle size. Oils sharing the same 5W-30 viscosity can have very different additive packages and are not automatically interchangeable.

Find the right 5W-30 engine oil
The main choice in this section is between ACEA A5/B5 oil for standard TD5, Defender 2.4 TDCI and selected BMW M57 servicing; ACEA C1 Low SAPS oil for engines requiring the relevant Jaguar Land Rover specification; and ACEA C3 oil carrying a different set of European manufacturer approvals.
| Engine or requirement | Best place to start | Check before ordering |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Defender TD5 or Discovery 2 TD5 service | Ravenol FO 5W-30 or Rock Oil Synthesis F 5W-30 | ACEA A5/B5 requirement, engine condition and complete service quantity |
| Defender 2.4 TDCI Puma or Range Rover L322 TD6 M57 | Ravenol FO 5W-30 or Rock Oil Synthesis F 5W-30 | Required Ford, Jaguar Land Rover or ACEA specification for the exact engine |
| DPF-equipped engine requiring ACEA C1 | Ravenol FLJ 5W-30 C1 or Rock Oil Synthesis C1 5W-30 | Exact Jaguar Land Rover specification, model year, engine and DPF fitment |
| Engine requiring ACEA C3 or major European manufacturer approvals | Ravenol VMP 5W-30 USVO® | BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche or Volkswagen approval required by the engine |
Check 5W-30 engine oil fitment before ordering
Vehicle model and viscosity alone are not enough to identify the correct oil. The same Land Rover model family can use different specifications according to engine, model year, emissions equipment and service requirements.
Identify the exact engine fitted, including TD5, 2.2 TDCI, 2.4 TDCI or BMW M57 where relevant.
Do not substitute A5/B5, C1 and C3 oils simply because they share the same 5W-30 viscosity grade.
Engines with a diesel particulate filter may require a reduced-ash oil carrying a specific C-category classification and manufacturer approval.
Check the engine oil capacity and whether the filter is also being changed before deciding how many 5 litre cans are required.
Understand the 5W-30 specifications
| Specification group | What it identifies |
|---|---|
| ACEA A5/B5 | Fuel-economy petrol and diesel engine oil used for standard TD5, Defender 2.4 TDCI and other engines where this specification is required. |
| ACEA C1 | Low SAPS oil for compatible emissions-control systems and engines requiring the relevant Jaguar Land Rover or Ford specification. |
| ACEA C3 | Mid-SAPS oil with a different viscosity and approval profile for engines specifically requiring C3 or one of the stated manufacturer approvals. |
| Manufacturer approval | A formal approval for the stated specification, which should be distinguished from a manufacturer recommendation shown on the product page. |
