80W-90 GL-4 gear oil for Land Rover drivetrain servicing, including Ravenol MZG mineral EP oil – our traditional mineral oil for the LT230 transfer box.

LT230 suitability is determined by the complete lubricant formulation, not simply whether GL-4 or GL-5 appears on the bottle. MZG combines the traditional 80W-90 mineral formulation with strong load-carrying performance, corrosion protection and good compatibility with metals and sealants.

80W-90 GL-4 oil for the LT230

Ravenol MZG is our traditional mineral choice for Land Rover LT230 transfer boxes. Its SAE 80W-90 mineral EP formulation provides a durable lubricating film under load, good cold-flow behaviour, oxidation stability, corrosion protection and neutral behaviour towards metals and sealing materials.

Job Best place to start Why
Traditional LT230 oil change Ravenol MZG 80W-90 Mineral 80W-90 EP gear oil selected by Twinwoods as our conventional LT230 lubricant.
Premium fully synthetic LT230 oil Ravenol VSG 75W-90 Fully synthetic alternative with excellent low-temperature behaviour, very high shear stability and excellent non-ferrous-metal compatibility.
Conventional Rover / Land Rover differential 80W-90 GL-5 Gear Oil Our traditional mineral differential oils are grouped separately around their primary hypoid final-drive use.

GL-4, GL-5 and the LT230

API GL classification describes gear-oil performance, but it does not by itself determine whether an oil is suitable for an LT230 or compatible with yellow-metal components. The additive chemistry and complete formulation of the individual lubricant matter.

MZG carries API GL-4 and achieves an ASTM D130 copper strip result of 1b. We stock it for the LT230 because the complete 80W-90 mineral formulation suits the transfer box, not simply because GL-4 appears on the specification sheet. Ravenol VSG demonstrates the same point from the other direction: it carries both API GL-4 and GL-5 while remaining an excellent premium fully synthetic LT230 oil.

MZG for traditional LT230 service
Mineral SAE 80W-90 with a durable EP oil film, high load-carrying capacity and good corrosion and oxidation protection.
VSG for premium LT230 service
Fully synthetic SAE 75W-90 with excellent cold flow, very high shear stability and excellent compatibility with non-ferrous metals.
GL rating is not a yellow-metal test
Do not treat GL-4 as automatically safe or GL-5 as automatically unsuitable. Compatibility depends on the individual oil formulation.
Component use still matters
Gearbox, transfer-box and differential oils should be selected around the actual component and lubricant formulation rather than viscosity or GL classification alone.
