75W-90 gear oils for Land Rover drivetrains, from Ravenol VSG for Defender Puma MT82 gearboxes and premium LT230 servicing to Ravenol RHP at the top of our differential-oil range and Ravenol LS for units requiring limited-slip friction characteristics.

These oils share the same 75W-90 viscosity grade but are built for different jobs. VSG is a fully synthetic transmission oil covering gearboxes, transfer boxes and compatible open differentials, RHP is our high-performance differential oil, and LS is formulated for differentials requiring dedicated limited-slip friction behaviour.

Find the Right 75W-90 Gear Oil

The component and the individual oil formulation matter more than the viscosity grade alone. Within this category, VSG covers the Defender Puma MT82 gearbox and premium LT230 servicing, while RHP and LS sit on the differential side of the range.

Job Best place to start What matters
Defender Puma MT82 gearbox Ravenol VSG 75W-90 Fully synthetic transmission oil with excellent cold-flow behaviour, very high shear stability and synchronised gearbox compatibility.
Premium LT230 transfer-box service Ravenol VSG 75W-90 Premium fully synthetic LT230 oil with a stable lubricating film, strong EP performance and excellent compatibility with non-ferrous metals.
High-performance open differential Ravenol RHP 75W-90 Our highest-performance differential oil, combining PAO base oils, USVO technology, high load-carrying capacity and exceptional viscosity stability.
Limited-slip differential Ravenol LS 75W-90 Dedicated 75W-90 GL-5 oil for differential designs requiring limited-slip friction characteristics.
ATB, locking or other upgraded differential ATB & Limited Slip Differential Oil Match the lubricant to the actual differential design rather than assuming every upgraded differential requires conventional LS oil.

Ravenol RHP – The Top of Our Differential Oil Range

Ravenol RHP 75W-90 is our premium differential oil for traditional Defender, Discovery 1 and Discovery 2 axles. Its PAO-based fully synthetic formulation and Ravenol USVO technology combine very high viscosity stability with high load-carrying capacity, excellent EP protection and outstanding shear stability, making it particularly attractive for hard-used differentials.

The viscosity data shows why RHP is very different from a conventional mineral 80W-90 differential oil. RHP is considerably less viscous while the axle is warming up, yet remains more viscous at 100 °C than Ravenol EPX 80W-90.

Property Ravenol RHP 75W-90 Ravenol EPX 80W-90
Oil type PAO-based fully synthetic, USVO Mineral
Viscosity at 40 °C 92.6 mm²/s 126.9 mm²/s
Viscosity at 100 °C 16.1 mm²/s 14.0 mm²/s
Viscosity Index 188 108
Pour point -57 °C -33 °C

That combination gives RHP much better cold flow without sacrificing hot viscosity. Ravenol separately specifies a high-pressure-stable lubricating film under high loads and temperatures, outstanding shear stability, excellent EP properties, high load-carrying capacity and very good wear protection. The measurable viscosity behaviour and the stated load-carrying performance are separate advantages, and together they are why RHP sits above a conventional mineral differential oil in our range.

VSG for MT82, LT230 and Open Differentials

Ravenol VSG is the broadest-use oil in this category. It meets both API GL-4 and API GL-5 and is suitable for synchronised and non-synchronised gearboxes, transfer gearboxes and highly stressed hypoid differentials without a limited-slip system. For Twinwoods, its main roles are Defender Puma MT82 gearbox oil first, premium fully synthetic LT230 oil second, with compatible open differential use as a further application.

VSG also demonstrates why GL classification alone does not determine LT230 suitability. Its formulation has excellent compatibility with non-ferrous metals, an ASTM D130 copper strip result of 1a, excellent EP properties and extreme shear stability. MZG 80W-90 remains our traditional mineral LT230 oil, while VSG is the premium fully synthetic route.

Choosing Between VSG, RHP and LS

Puma MT82 gearbox
Ravenol VSG is the gearbox-focused oil in this category, with the cold-flow and shear-stability characteristics we want for the six-speed MT82.
LT230 transfer box
VSG is our premium fully synthetic LT230 oil. Ravenol MZG 80W-90 remains the traditional mineral alternative.
Standard open differential
RHP is our high-performance differential choice where a premium 75W-90 is wanted. VSG is also suitable for compatible open hypoid differentials.
Limited-slip, ATB or locking differential
Match the oil to the actual differential design and its friction requirements. Dedicated LS oil is not automatically required by every upgraded differential.
