The correct oil depends on the differential fitted and the demands placed on it. Standard open differentials, ATB units, plate-type limited-slip differentials and locking differentials can have different lubricant requirements even where the viscosity grade appears similar.

Find the Right Rover Differential Oil
Traditional Rover differentials are straightforward to lubricate when the axle is still standard, but the choice becomes wider once synthetic oils, ATB units, limited-slip differentials and locking differentials are involved. This section brings the relevant oils together by differential use rather than making the viscosity or GL classification the starting point.

EPX or RHP for a Standard Rover Differential?
Ravenol EPX 80W-90 is our traditional mineral oil for conventional Rover and Land Rover hypoid differentials. It provides the extreme-pressure and load-carrying performance expected from a conventional differential oil and remains the straightforward choice for routine axle servicing.
Ravenol RHP 75W-90 sits at the top of our differential-oil range. Its PAO-based fully synthetic USVO formulation gives substantially better viscosity-temperature behaviour, strong shear stability and high-load protection. RHP is particularly attractive for hard-used axles, including vehicles used for towing, higher engine output, sustained motorway running, expedition work, off-road use and competition.
VSG as a Fully Synthetic Differential Oil
Ravenol VSG 75W-90 is primarily our Defender Puma MT82 gearbox oil and premium fully synthetic LT230 oil, but the same formulation is also suitable for highly stressed open hypoid differentials without a limited-slip system. It gives another fully synthetic route for a standard differential where its 75W-90 specification and formulation suit the axle.
VSG and RHP therefore overlap in standard open-differential use, but their places in our range remain different. VSG is the broader transmission oil covering MT82, LT230 and compatible open differentials; RHP is the differential-led high-performance oil.
Limited-Slip, ATB and Locking Differentials
An upgraded differential does not automatically require conventional limited-slip oil. Plate-type limited-slip differentials can depend on specific friction characteristics, while ATB, helical and locking differentials may have different lubricant requirements. The actual differential design and its manufacturer's oil specification matter more than the vehicle model alone.

Match both the required viscosity and the limited-slip friction characteristics. Ravenol LS is available in 75W-90 and 80W-90 formulations.

Do not assume an ATB automatically requires conventional LS friction modifiers. Follow the oil requirement for the actual differential fitted.
