80W-90 GL-5 Differential Oil

Traditional Rover and Land Rover hypoid differentials operate under high sliding and contact loads, requiring strong extreme-pressure protection and a durable lubricating film. Ravenol EPX is our conventional mineral oil for standard open differentials, while Ravenol LS is formulated for limited-slip differential designs requiring specific friction characteristics.

EPX or LS?

Ravenol EPX and Ravenol LS share the same SAE 80W-90 viscosity grade and API GL-5 classification, but they are formulated for different differential requirements. EPX is our traditional mineral oil for conventional open Rover and Land Rover differentials. LS is designed for limited-slip differential units requiring controlled friction characteristics.

Standard open differential
Ravenol EPX is the conventional mineral 80W-90 GL-5 oil in our range for standard Rover and Land Rover hypoid differentials.
Limited-slip differential
Ravenol LS combines GL-5 extreme-pressure protection with the friction characteristics required by compatible limited-slip units.
ATB and locking differentials
ATB, locking and other aftermarket differential designs do not all require the same oil. Match the lubricant to the differential manufacturer's requirement.
Viscosity and specification
Two oils carrying the same 80W-90 and GL-5 classifications can still have different additive chemistry, friction characteristics and intended use.

GL-5 and LT230 Transfer Boxes

API GL-5 does not automatically make a gear oil unsuitable for an LT230 or incompatible with yellow-metal components. Compatibility depends on the formulation of the individual lubricant. Ravenol EPX, for example, is compatible with non-ferrous metals and achieves an ASTM D130 copper strip result of 1b. EPX remains primarily our traditional differential oil, while Ravenol MZG 80W-90 and VSG 75W-90 are our more directly targeted LT230 oils.
