Ravenol VSG SAE 75W-90 is our premium fully synthetic oil for the Defender Puma MT82 six-speed manual gearbox, with a second major role as a premium LT230 transfer-box oil. It combines API GL-4 and GL-5 performance with excellent cold-flow behaviour, extreme shear stability, strong extreme-pressure protection and excellent compatibility with non-ferrous metals. VSG is also suitable for highly stressed open hypoid differentials requiring a 75W-90 GL-5 oil. This 4L pack provides enough oil for a complete MT82 gearbox oil change.
VSG for the Defender Puma MT82 Gearbox
VSG is suitable for the MT82 six-speed manual gearbox fitted to Defender Puma 2.4 and 2.2 TDCI models. Its fully synthetic formulation gives excellent low-temperature flow while maintaining a stable lubricating film as gearbox temperature and load increase. A pour point of -57 °C and Brookfield viscosity of 47.000 mPa*s at -40 °C demonstrate its strong cold-temperature performance, while a viscosity index of 168 and extreme shear stability help the oil retain its SAE 75W-90 characteristics through extended use.
Strong wear protection, excellent EP performance, resistance to oxidation and foaming, corrosion protection and good elastomer compatibility all suit the demands of a synchronised manual gearbox. For Defender Puma MT82 servicing, VSG combines strong cold-shift behaviour with the film strength and viscosity stability needed once the gearbox is hot and working hard.
The 4L pack provides enough oil for a complete MT82 oil change without buying several individual bottles. The specified service quantity should be measured into the gearbox rather than using the filler opening as a conventional fill-and-spill level.
Premium Fully Synthetic Oil for the LT230
VSG is also suitable for transfer gearboxes and gives us a premium fully synthetic choice for the Land Rover LT230. Its SAE 75W-90 formulation combines excellent low-temperature behaviour with very high shear stability and a stable lubricating film under high load, making it particularly attractive where a higher-specification synthetic oil is preferred over a traditional mineral 80W-90.
Its API GL-4 and GL-5 classification also demonstrates why GL rating alone should not be used as shorthand for yellow-metal compatibility. VSG has excellent compatibility with non-ferrous metals and achieves an ASTM D130 copper strip test result of 1a. For LT230 servicing, the choice between VSG and MZG is therefore about formulation and the type of oil wanted: MZG 80W-90 is our traditional mineral choice, while VSG 75W-90 is our premium fully synthetic choice.
Differential Use
VSG is also designed for highly stressed axle drives and hypoid differentials without a limited-slip system. It can therefore be used in standard open Rover/Land Rover differentials requiring SAE 75W-90 GL-5 oil, providing a fully synthetic alternative with excellent shear stability, EP protection and high-temperature viscosity retention.
Aftermarket limited-slip and ATB differentials should be matched to the differential manufacturer’s lubricant requirement rather than treated as a standard open differential. See our ATB & Limited Slip Differential Oil section where a specialist fluid is required.

The Ravenol VSG 75W-90 1L version is available where a smaller quantity is required. For a traditional mineral LT230 oil, Ravenol MZG 80W-90 GL-4 remains the conventional choice. For standard open Rover/Land Rover differentials where a mineral 80W-90 GL-5 oil is preferred, Ravenol EPX 80W-90 GL-5 provides the traditional differential oil.

Brand
Ravenol
Ravenol is our main lubricant brand for Land Rover servicing, covering engine oils, manual and automatic gearboxes, transfer boxes, differentials, ACE and power steering, brake fluid, coolant, grease and specialist workshop fluids.
We use Ravenol because the range lets us select the lubricant around the actual engine, gearbox, axle or hydraulic system rather than relying on viscosity alone. The result is a deliberately selected Land Rover range in which every product has a defined job, from TD5 engine oil and R380 MTF-94 to specialist ZF ATF, LT230 oil, limited-slip differential oil and later transfer-box fluids.
Why Twinwoods partners with Ravenol
Ravenol is a genuine German lubricant manufacturer, developing and producing its oils, fluids and greases in Germany. The range is backed by unusually detailed technical data, which matters to us because lubricant choice should be based on much more than the viscosity printed on the bottle.
We use Ravenol in our service kits, recommend it for the Land Rovers we specialise in and use it in vehicles we work on ourselves. More importantly, the range gives us properly specialised products for different engines, gearboxes, transfer boxes, axles and hydraulic systems rather than trying to make one generic lubricant cover everything.

More than the correct number on the bottle
Two oils carrying the same viscosity grade can be very different products. Base oil, additive chemistry, volatility, viscosity stability, friction characteristics and manufacturer specifications all affect how a lubricant behaves once it is hot and working inside the component.
That is particularly important with Land Rovers. An R380 gearbox, LT230 transfer box, Rover differential, ZF automatic gearbox and electronically controlled later transfer box all place different demands on their lubricant. We select the Ravenol product around the component itself rather than simply finding the nearest familiar viscosity.
Ravenol engine oil
Our Ravenol engine-oil range runs from traditional oils for 200TDI, 300TDI and classic petrol engines through to specialist oils for TD5, Defender Puma TDCI and later Land Rover engines. Ravenol VMO 5W-40 remains our main TD5 recommendation, RUP 5W-40 covers very highly tuned TD5 engines, Turbo-C HDC 15W-40 is our preferred oil for standard 200TDI and 300TDI engines, while FO, FLJ, VMP and SFE cover the relevant later engine and emissions-system requirements.
