Td5 Suspension Upgrades
Defender TD5 and Discovery 2 suspension upgrades including Bilstein and Old Man Emu steering dampers, polyurethane suspension bush kits, Discovery 2 Watts linkage bushes and complete shock absorber kits.
Start with the vehicle and the suspension job. Defender bush kits split by panhard rod bolt size, front radius arm bush width and upper A-frame hardware, while Discovery 2 main suspension bushes and Watts linkage bushes are supplied as separate kits.

Find the right TD5 suspension upgrade
Suspension upgrades in this section are bought by vehicle and component rather than engine alone. Match the part to Defender or Discovery 2 first, then decide whether the job involves steering control, main suspension bushes, Discovery 2 Watts linkage bushes or shock absorber replacement.
| Job | Best place to start | Check before ordering |
|---|---|---|
| Upgrade a Defender steering damper | Bilstein B6 Defender steering damper or Old Man Emu Defender steering damper | Both replace the standard Defender damper layout; compare gas monotube and foam-cell construction |
| Upgrade a Discovery 2 steering damper | Bilstein B6 Discovery 2 steering damper or Old Man Emu Discovery 2 steering damper | Use the Discovery 2 eye-to-eye damper rather than the Defender pin-and-eye version |
| Refresh the main Defender suspension bushes | TF940 Terrafirma suspension bush kit | Check the exact bushes included and whether any additional anti-roll bar or shock absorber bushes are required |
| Fit a SuperPro kit to a late Defender TD5 | KIT043CK SuperPro bush kit | Fits late Defender TD5 models using M16 front panhard rod bushes and the earlier 3/4 UNF upper A-frame arrangement |
| Refresh the main Discovery 2 suspension bushes | TF945 Terrafirma bush kit or KIT5111K SuperPro bush kit | Compare the exact bush positions included; Watts linkage bushes remain separate from the SuperPro main suspension kit |
| Repair worn Discovery 2 Watts linkage bushes | TF1035 Terrafirma kit or SPF4400K SuperPro kit | These kits cover the rear Watts linkage rather than the main radius arm and panhard rod bushes |
| Replace all four shock absorbers | Bilstein B6 4600 shock absorber kits | Match the kit to Defender or Discovery 2 and check the suspension height before ordering |
Check suspension fitment before ordering
Similar Defender and Discovery suspension parts can use different mounting arrangements even when the vehicles look broadly alike underneath. Use the product title, vehicle fitment and suspension hardware together rather than selecting a kit from the TD5 engine name alone.
Steering dampers, shock absorbers and suspension bush kits are vehicle-specific and are not interchangeable between the two models.
Check the front panhard rod bolt size, front radius arm axle-bush width and upper A-frame bush arrangement before selecting a SuperPro kit.
The rear Watts linkage uses its own bushes. These are normally ordered separately from the main radius arm and panhard rod bush kit.
Check standard or raised height, ACE or non-ACE equipment and coil or air rear suspension wherever those details affect the product or included bushes.
Compare the suspension upgrade types
| Part type | What it changes | Main ordering check |
|---|---|---|
| Steering damper | Controls rapid steering movement, kickback and vibration reaching the steering wheel | Defender or Discovery 2 mounting layout and required damper construction |
| Main suspension bush kit | Replaces worn radius arm, panhard rod, trailing arm and related suspension bushes included in the kit | Vehicle, suspension hardware and exact kit contents |
| Watts linkage bush kit | Refreshes the Discovery 2 rear axle locating linkage where worn bushes cause knocking or unwanted movement | Discovery 2 fitment and whether a complete five-bush or linkage-specific kit is required |
| Shock absorber kit | Replaces the front and rear dampers to improve control of suspension movement and body motion | Vehicle, suspension height and whether the kit contains all four dampers |
Defender TD5 suspension bush kits
Defender TD5 SuperPro kit selection depends on the suspension hardware fitted. Early vehicles use M14 front panhard rod bushes, while later TD5 models use the M16 arrangement. The upper A-frame bush and bolt arrangement creates a further split between late TD5, early Puma and later Puma vehicles.
Discovery 2 suspension and Watts linkage bushes
Discovery 2 main suspension kits cover combinations of panhard rod, radius arm and anti-roll bar bushes. Watts linkage bushes are a separate rear-suspension job and should not be assumed to be included in a general Discovery 2 bush kit. Check whether ACE, non-ACE, coil-spring or air-suspension bushes are included where relevant.
