Description

Ravenol RUP Racing Ultra Performance 5W-40 is our preferred engine oil for the most highly tuned Defender and Discovery 2 TD5 engines, particularly 250–300 bhp-plus builds and the VNT turbo conversions commonly used at this level. Race-developed but fully approved for everyday road use, RUP protects both the engine and turbocharger when sustained boost, high oil temperatures and extreme mechanical load place far greater demands on the lubricant than standard TD5 servicing.

Best oil for a TD5 with a VNT turbo

For a highly tuned TD5 with a VNT turbo, our preferred oil is Ravenol RUP 5W-40. High-output VNT builds need more than an ordinary road-going engine oil: the lubricant must protect the crankshaft, bearings, camshaft and unit-injector valvetrain while also lubricating and helping to carry heat away from the turbocharger.

RUP sits above our normal TD5 oil recommendations once the engine output, turbocharger load and operating temperatures have moved beyond ordinary road-tuning levels. Its racing formulation provides the high-temperature stability, shear resistance and secure lubricating film needed by serious TD5 builds without making it unsuitable for vehicles that are still regularly driven on the road.

The forgotten part of a high-power TD5 build

High-output TD5 builds normally receive upgraded turbochargers, intercoolers, clutches, halfshafts, CV joints and other driveline components, yet the engine oil is often treated as though the engine were still producing standard power. The lubricant protecting the engine and turbocharger deserves the same consideration as the hardware being upgraded around them.

The Defender TD5 originally produced approximately 121 bhp, while the Discovery 2 TD5 produced approximately 137 bhp. A 250–300 bhp TD5 is therefore producing roughly 1.8 to 2.5 times its original factory output, depending on the vehicle and final tune.

That increase does not affect the engine alone. Higher boost pressure, greater fuelling and sustained high-load running place substantially more heat and stress into the turbocharger and its oil-fed bearing system. The same oil must protect the crankshaft, bearings, camshaft and unit-injector system while also lubricating and cooling a turbocharger operating far beyond the original TD5 duty.

A standard road oil may still carry a specification associated with the original TD5, but that specification was established around the original engine output and operating conditions. It cannot reasonably be expected to retain the same protection margin when the engine and turbocharger are producing twice the original power under sustained extreme load.

Even Ravenol VMO 5W-40, our preferred oil for standard, remapped, towing and hard-working road TD5s, was not developed as a dedicated motorsport lubricant for engines producing two or more times their original output. At 250–300 bhp and beyond, RUP is the appropriate step above a conventional road oil.

Race-developed protection for road-going TD5s

RUP uses a PAO-based fully synthetic formulation with highly polar Group V base oils and Ravenol USVO technology. Its 3.9 mPa·s HTHS viscosity, extreme shear stability and very low 6.0% Noack volatility help it maintain a secure lubricating film at very high operating temperatures rather than losing viscosity or evaporating under sustained load.

These characteristics are particularly relevant to high-output VNT-equipped TD5 engines, where the turbocharger can operate under substantial boost and heat across a much broader part of the engine’s working range. The oil must continue flowing quickly while resisting shear, oxidation and evaporation as temperatures rise.

RUP was developed as a genuine motorsport oil rather than an ordinary road oil carrying racing branding. However, it has also passed the required testing for recognised manufacturer approvals for everyday road use. This makes it equally at home in a competition TD5 or a highly tuned road vehicle driven normally between events, hard-use sessions or off-road competition.

Ravenol also includes VW 505.01 among the manufacturer recommendations, providing a relevant specification link to the unit-injector design used by the TD5. RUP is suitable for both petrol and diesel engines and provides genuine racing-oil protection without becoming an impractical race-only lubricant.

TD5 Engine and Turbo Use

  • Highly tuned Defender TD5 engines
  • Highly tuned Discovery 2 TD5 engines
  • High-output TD5 builds producing around 250–300 bhp and beyond
  • TD5 engines running VNT or larger turbocharger conversions
  • Competition, motorsport and sustained extreme-load use
  • Highly tuned road vehicles requiring motorsport-level engine and turbocharger protection

RUP is aimed at the extreme end of TD5 tuning rather than ordinary servicing. For standard, normally remapped, towing and hard-working road vehicles, Ravenol VMO 5W-40 TD5 engine oil remains our preferred everyday oil.

Engine-builder advice should take priority on bespoke competition engines where bearing clearances, oil temperatures, fuel dilution or service intervals differ substantially from a normal TD5 installation.

Ravenol

Ravenol is our main lubricant brand for Land Rover servicing, covering engine oils, manual and automatic gearboxes, transfer boxes, differentials, ACE and power steering, brake fluid, coolant, grease and specialist workshop fluids.

We use Ravenol because the range lets us select the lubricant around the actual engine, gearbox, axle or hydraulic system rather than relying on viscosity alone. The result is a deliberately selected Land Rover range in which every product has a defined job, from TD5 engine oil and R380 MTF-94 to specialist ZF ATF, LT230 oil, limited-slip differential oil and later transfer-box fluids.

Why Twinwoods partners with Ravenol

Ravenol is a genuine German lubricant manufacturer, developing and producing its oils, fluids and greases in Germany. The range is backed by unusually detailed technical data, which matters to us because lubricant choice should be based on much more than the viscosity printed on the bottle. We use Ravenol in our service kits, recommend it for the Land Rovers we specialise in and use it in vehicles we work on ourselves. More importantly, the range gives us properly specialised products for different engines, gearboxes, transfer boxes, axles and hydraulic systems rather than trying to make one generic lubricant cover everything.

More than the correct number on the bottle

Two oils carrying the same viscosity grade can be very different products. Base oil, additive chemistry, volatility, viscosity stability, friction characteristics and manufacturer specifications all affect how a lubricant behaves once it is hot and working inside the component. That is particularly important with Land Rovers. An R380 gearbox, LT230 transfer box, Rover differential, ZF automatic gearbox and electronically controlled later transfer box all place different demands on their lubricant. We select the Ravenol product around the component itself rather than simply finding the nearest familiar viscosity.
Identify the component Start with the engine, gearbox, transfer box, differential or hydraulic system being serviced.
Match the specification Check the complete ACEA, API, GL, manufacturer or transmission-fluid requirement rather than viscosity alone.
Consider vehicle use Standard servicing, towing, off-road use and highly tuned engines can place very different demands on the lubricant.
Check existing fluid Coolant, hydraulic fluids and specialist transmission oils should not be mixed simply because their colour or general description appears similar.

Ravenol engine oil

Our Ravenol engine-oil range runs from traditional oils for 200TDI, 300TDI and classic petrol engines through to specialist oils for TD5, Defender Puma TDCI and later Land Rover engines. Ravenol VMO 5W-40 remains our main TD5 recommendation, RUP 5W-40 covers very highly tuned TD5 engines, Turbo-C HDC 15W-40 is our preferred oil for standard 200TDI and 300TDI engines, while FO, FLJ, VMP and SFE cover the relevant later engine and emissions-system requirements.
