Description

Ravenol VMO SAE 5W-40 in a 1L bottle, containing exactly the same oil as our main 5L TD5 service product. VMO is our main engine oil recommendation for Defender TD5 and Discovery 2 TD5 engines. The TD5 uses cam-driven unit injectors and places substantial loads through the camshaft and injector drive system, so VMO’s formal VW 505.01 OEM approval, 4.0 mPa·s HTHS viscosity and low 8.8% Noack volatility are particularly relevant to the way a TD5 engine works.

Why We Recommend Ravenol VMO for TD5 Engines

The TD5 needs more from its engine oil than simply the correct viscosity. Its camshaft operates both the valve gear and the unit-injector system, creating very high localised loads through the camshaft and injector drive. VMO carries formal VW 505.01 OEM approval from Volkswagen, making that approval particularly relevant to the lubrication demands of the TD5.

VMO also has an HTHS viscosity of 4.0 mPa·s. HTHS measures the oil’s viscosity under high-temperature, high-shear test conditions and gives a useful indication of the lubricating film available in heavily loaded hot engine components. Ravenol also states that VMO provides a safe lubricant film at high operating temperatures and excellent wear protection, while its low 8.8% Noack volatility helps limit evaporative oil loss.

That combination makes VMO equally at home in a standard TD5 or an engine working harder through remapping, towing, off-road use or sustained motorway driving. In our own TD5 experience, VMO also significantly reduces oil migration into the injector loom compared with other commonly used engine oils. It has become our normal TD5 service oil and the oil we recommend first for the overwhelming majority of Defender TD5 and Discovery 2 TD5 engines.

Ravenol

Ravenol is our main lubricant brand for Land Rover servicing, covering engine oils, manual and automatic gearboxes, transfer boxes, differentials, ACE and power steering, brake fluid, coolant, grease and specialist workshop fluids.

We use Ravenol because the range lets us select the lubricant around the actual engine, gearbox, axle or hydraulic system rather than relying on viscosity alone. The result is a deliberately selected Land Rover range in which every product has a defined job, from TD5 engine oil and R380 MTF-94 to specialist ZF ATF, LT230 oil, limited-slip differential oil and later transfer-box fluids.

Why Twinwoods partners with Ravenol

Ravenol is a genuine German lubricant manufacturer, developing and producing its oils, fluids and greases in Germany. The range is backed by unusually detailed technical data, which matters to us because lubricant choice should be based on much more than the viscosity printed on the bottle.

We use Ravenol in our service kits, recommend it for the Land Rovers we specialise in and use it in vehicles we work on ourselves. More importantly, the range gives us properly specialised products for different engines, gearboxes, transfer boxes, axles and hydraulic systems rather than trying to make one generic lubricant cover everything.

More than the correct number on the bottle

Two oils carrying the same viscosity grade can be very different products. Base oil, additive chemistry, volatility, viscosity stability, friction characteristics and manufacturer specifications all affect how a lubricant behaves once it is hot and working inside the component.

That is particularly important with Land Rovers. An R380 gearbox, LT230 transfer box, Rover differential, ZF automatic gearbox and electronically controlled later transfer box all place different demands on their lubricant. We select the Ravenol product around the component itself rather than simply finding the nearest familiar viscosity.

Identify the component Start with the engine, gearbox, transfer box, differential or hydraulic system being serviced.
Match the specification Check the complete ACEA, API, GL, manufacturer or transmission-fluid requirement rather than viscosity alone.
Consider vehicle use Standard servicing, towing, off-road use and highly tuned engines can place very different demands on the lubricant.
Check existing fluid Coolant, hydraulic fluids and specialist transmission oils should not be mixed simply because their colour or general description appears similar.

Ravenol engine oil

Our Ravenol engine-oil range runs from traditional oils for 200TDI, 300TDI and classic petrol engines through to specialist oils for TD5, Defender Puma TDCI and later Land Rover engines. Ravenol VMO 5W-40 remains our main TD5 recommendation, RUP 5W-40 covers very highly tuned TD5 engines, Turbo-C HDC 15W-40 is our preferred oil for standard 200TDI and 300TDI engines, while FO, FLJ, VMP and SFE cover the relevant later engine and emissions-system requirements.

Returning it yourself? Please use a suitable return service with appropriate cover for the value of the goods, pack and address the parcel correctly, and retain sufficient evidence to identify and trace the return.

Returns – quick FAQs

How long do I have to return an item?
For a UK consumer change-of-mind cancellation, tell us within 14 days of receiving the goods. You then have a further 14 days to return them.
Who pays return carriage?
For change-of-mind returns, return carriage and safe packing are your responsibility. Where suitable, we can provide a managed tracked return service and advise the cost before it is arranged.
What condition must a change-of-mind return be in?
Change-of-mind returns must be complete, in their original packaging and in resaleable condition. Returned goods must be the same goods supplied by us and complete with all components, accessories and any free or promotional items supplied with them.

Fitting, attempted fitting, contamination, damage, missing packaging or excessive handling can substantially reduce the value of the goods and may result in a corresponding reduction to your refund.
Can I fit a part and then return it?
Please check fitment and suitability before installation. Please do not fit or attempt to fit a part unless you intend to keep it.

Once a part has been fitted or an attempt has been made to fit it, it may be marked, contaminated, damaged or otherwise unsuitable for resale as a new part. We do not operate a used-parts or bargain-bin section, so a fitted or damaged part can have very little resale value.

Where your handling has reduced the value of the goods beyond what is reasonably necessary to inspect them, your refund may be reduced to reflect that loss in value.
What if the item is faulty?
Contact us before returning it. Where a return is reasonably required for a faulty, damaged or incorrectly described item, we will normally provide a prepaid return service or cover reasonable return costs agreed with us.
Are any items excluded from change-of-mind returns?
Statutory exclusions apply to certain types of goods. Please see our full Terms & Conditions for details.
How do I start a return?
