Description

Heavy-duty TD5 exhaust manifold stud kit for Defender TD5 and Discovery 2 TD5, replacing the original manifold fixings with purpose-made M8 grade 8.8 engineering studs and copper-coated flanged all-metal locking nuts. The kit also includes the turbo-to-manifold, turbo-to-downpipe and turbo oil-drain gaskets, oil-feed sealing washers and associated turbo fixing nuts, allowing the manifold and turbo assembly to go back together without reusing old heat-cycled fittings.

Kit Contents

  • 10 × M8 grade 8.8 part-threaded engineering studs
  • 10 × copper-coated flanged all-metal locking nuts – M8 × 1.25
  • 1 × turbo to manifold gasket
  • 1 × turbo to downpipe gasket
  • 1 × turbo oil drain gasket
  • 2 × turbo oil feed banjo sealing washers
  • 3 × M10 flanged nuts for the turbo to downpipe fixing
  • 3 × M8 flanged nuts for the turbo to manifold fixing

The main manifold-to-cylinder-head gasket is supplied separately. Add the LKG100470 TD5 exhaust manifold gasket when required.

Part-Threaded Engineering Studs

The studs are purpose-made part-threaded engineering fasteners, not lengths of generic fully threaded bar or ordinary bolts. Each stud has a shorter cylinder-head thread, a plain central shank and a longer outer thread for the manifold nut. Those different sections are deliberate: the head-side thread provides the required engagement in the aluminium cylinder head, the plain shank passes through the manifold fixing stack, and the longer outer thread provides the required nut-side clamping range.

The part-threaded design also controls how far the stud can be inserted into the cylinder head. Unlike fully threaded alternatives, the stud cannot simply continue deeper into the blind hole, reducing the risk of over-insertion damaging the back of the hole and breaching the engine coolant gallery.

The cylinder-head end provides approximately 10 mm of thread engagement. The relatively short threaded section is intentional and already gives considerably greater engagement than the original Genuine Land Rover stud arrangement.

Thread load is not shared equally across every engaged thread. In a conventional threaded joint the highest loading is concentrated through the first engaged threads, with progressively less load carried farther along the thread. Once adequate engagement has been achieved for this joint, extending the stud substantially deeper into the aluminium head does not provide a meaningful additional benefit to the joint.

There is also a serviceability reason not to use unnecessary additional thread engagement. These studs operate in an aluminium cylinder head in a high-temperature exhaust environment and may eventually need to be removed again. Increasing the amount of steel thread engaged in the aluminium head creates more threaded contact area that can corrode or seize after years of heat cycling, potentially making future removal more difficult. The 10 mm engagement therefore provides ample thread depth without unnecessarily increasing that risk.

Copper-Coated Locking Nuts

The kit uses copper-coated flanged steel all-metal locking nuts, providing a positive locking action without relying on a nylon insert that is unsuitable for exhaust temperatures. The integrated flange spreads the clamping load across the manifold fixing face.

Earlier versions of the Heavy Duty kit used stainless steel Aerotight locking nuts. These were subsequently replaced with copper-coated steel locking nuts, which are now our preferred pairing with the grade 8.8 steel manifold studs.

Thermal Management & Manifold Selection

Sustained high exhaust gas temperatures (EGTs) can distort or crack an exhaust manifold when thermal loads become excessive. For tuned engines, heavy towing or vehicles operating under constant load, fitting an EGT gauge is recommended to monitor operating conditions.

The condition and design of the manifold itself remain important. This heavy-duty stud kit provides a strong fixing arrangement for original cast-iron manifolds and properly engineered performance manifolds, but the fixings cannot compensate for a manifold that is already badly distorted or unable to cope with the temperatures being generated.

This Heavy Duty kit is for the standard no-spacer manifold fixing arrangement. For the extended-stud setup using stainless spacers, see the Ultimate TD5 Exhaust Manifold Studs & Spacer Kit.

Twinwoods 4x4

Twinwoods 4x4 products include parts, tools and kits developed by us, made specifically for us, assembled from selected components or taken under our wing where we have found a specialist product worth putting our name behind.

The range is built around real Land Rover jobs: fixing awkward parts supply, combining the right components into one kit, improving the specification of an existing part or making something that simply is not readily available elsewhere.

What the Twinwoods 4x4 label means

The Twinwoods 4x4 name covers products we have developed, specified, assembled or deliberately selected ourselves. Some are made by us, some are manufactured specifically for us, and some are complete kits we put together around Land Rover jobs where buying the individual parts separately makes little sense.

It can also include good specialist products that we have taken under our wing. Small manufacturers often make excellent components without having a recognised retail brand behind them. If we know the product, are happy with what is being supplied and are prepared to support it ourselves, we may sell it under the Twinwoods 4x4 name rather than pretend the maker's name adds anything useful.

Product type What it means
Made by Twinwoods 4x4 Parts and specialist tools produced by us for particular Land Rover jobs or gaps in the normal parts market.
Made for Twinwoods 4x4 Components produced specifically for us, including parts manufactured to a specification or material we have selected.
Twinwoods 4x4 kits Job-specific kits assembled by us from the components needed for a particular repair, service or upgrade.
Specialist products Products from smaller or specialist manufacturers that we know, are happy to put our name behind and have taken under the Twinwoods 4x4 wing.

Built around real Land Rover jobs

A lot of Twinwoods 4x4 products start with a straightforward problem: the correct fixings are awkward to buy, a small seal is unavailable separately, a repair needs several parts from different sources, or an existing product can simply be better specified.

That is why the range includes everything from O-ring kits, copper washers, stainless fixings and component-specific bolt sets through to TD5 manifold hardware, service tools, test equipment, propshaft conversion kits and complete repair or upgrade packages. The common thread is not where the individual component came from; it is that there is a good reason for us to stock it as a Twinwoods 4x4 product.

What goes into our kits

Where a Twinwoods 4x4 kit combines parts from established manufacturers, the relevant brands and quality levels are identified on the individual product page. Other components may be made specifically for us or sourced from specialist manufacturers where the product itself matters more than the name on the packet.

Individual product pages give the exact kit contents, materials, dimensions, component brands and vehicle fitment relevant to that particular product.

Returns
Up to 60-day returns Change-of-mind return carriage at your cost Check fitment before ordering
Extended 60-day returns. In addition to your statutory rights, eligible products can be returned for up to 60 days from delivery. Our extended returns policy automatically applies to individual products purchased for less than £250 including VAT. Products costing £250 or more may still be accepted for return at our discretion.
Please choose carefully before ordering. Check part numbers, fitment and suitability before purchase. Please do not order parts simply to try them or on the assumption that they can be fitted and then returned if unsuitable.
  • Changed your mind within 14 days? UK and EEA consumers have statutory cancellation rights. Tell us within 14 days of receiving your order, then return the goods within the following 14 days.
  • Need longer? Eligible products can be returned under our voluntary extended returns policy. Contact us within 60 days of delivery and, once the return has been agreed, send the goods back within 14 days.
  • Extended returns must be unused, unfitted, complete and suitable for resale as new. Goods must be undamaged, unmarked and uncontaminated, with all components and accessories supplied and their original product packaging where this formed part of the supplied product.
  • A £10 handling charge applies to extended returns. This is charged once per return consignment, regardless of how many eligible products are returned together. It does not apply where your statutory cancellation rights apply.
  • Return carriage and safe packing are your responsibility for change-of-mind returns.
  • Managed UK returns: where suitable, we can provide a convenient prepaid tracked return service with straightforward drop-off, proof of handover and tracking linked to your return. The cost will be advised before it is arranged and may be deducted from your refund.
  • Please do not fit or attempt to fit a part unless you intend to keep it. Fitting, attempted fitting, contamination, damage or excessive handling can substantially reduce the value of the goods. A product which has been fitted or used will not normally qualify for our voluntary extended returns policy.
  • Faulty, damaged or incorrectly described? Contact us first. We will advise the appropriate return method and will normally provide a prepaid return service or cover reasonable agreed return costs.
Returning it yourself? Please use a tracked, insured return service appropriate to the value and nature of the goods, pack and address the parcel correctly, and retain sufficient evidence to identify and trace the return. You remain responsible for the goods until they reach us.

Returns – quick FAQs

How long do I have to return an item?
Eligible products can be returned for up to 60 days from delivery under our voluntary extended returns policy.

For UK and EEA consumers, statutory change-of-mind cancellation rights also apply: tell us within 14 days of receiving your order, then return the goods within the following 14 days.
Which products qualify for 60-day returns?
Our extended returns policy automatically applies to individual products purchased for less than £250 including VAT.

Products purchased for £250 or more are not automatically covered, although we may agree to accept them for return at our discretion. Eligibility is based on the price of each individual product rather than the total order value.
Is there a charge for an extended return?
Returns made under our voluntary extended returns policy are subject to a £10 handling charge per return consignment, regardless of the number of eligible products returned together.

This charge does not apply where the return is being made under your statutory cancellation rights.
Who pays return carriage?
For change-of-mind returns, return carriage and safe packing are your responsibility. Where suitable, we can provide a prepaid tracked return service and advise the cost before it is arranged.

If an item is faulty, damaged or incorrectly described, contact us first. Where return is reasonably required, we will normally provide a prepaid return service or cover reasonable return costs agreed with us.
What condition must an extended return be in?
Goods returned under our extended returns policy must be unused, unfitted, complete and suitable for resale as new. They must be undamaged, unmarked and uncontaminated, with all components and accessories supplied and their original product packaging where this formed part of the supplied product.
Can I fit a part and then return it?
Please check fitment and suitability before installation. Please do not fit or attempt to fit a part unless you intend to keep it.

Once a part has been fitted or an attempt has been made to fit it, it may be marked, contaminated, damaged or otherwise unsuitable for resale as a new part. Fitted or used goods will not normally qualify for our voluntary extended returns policy.

Where statutory cancellation rights apply, handling beyond what is reasonably necessary to inspect the goods may result in a reduction to your refund if it has reduced their value.
What if the item is faulty?
Contact us before returning it. Where a return is reasonably required for a faulty, damaged or incorrectly described item, we will normally provide a prepaid return service or cover reasonable return costs agreed with us.
Are any items excluded from 60-day returns?
Products purchased for £250 or more including VAT are not automatically covered by our extended returns policy, although we may agree a return at our discretion.

Extended returns must also meet the condition requirements above. Statutory exclusions and any separate statutory rights continue to apply as set out in our full Terms & Conditions.

Warranty

Buy with confidence: all new parts sold by Twinwoods 4x4 include at least 12 months manufacturer warranty against defects in materials and workmanship under normal use.

Some products and brands may include a longer warranty period where this is provided by the manufacturer. Where applicable, this will normally be stated on the individual product page or covered by the manufacturer’s own warranty terms.

Warranty cover applies to manufacturing defects. It does not cover misuse, incorrect fitting, competition use unless stated, contamination, modification, damage during installation, normal wear and tear, or failure caused by an unrelated vehicle fault. For certain components, proof of professional fitment may be required.

Warranty claims may require the part to be returned for inspection and/or supplier testing before the claim is accepted. Any advance replacement is discretionary.

Warranty remedies relate to the part itself, meaning repair or replacement, or refund if those are not possible. Warranty does not cover labour, removal or refitting, diagnostics, consumables, travel or other incidental costs.

This warranty is in addition to your legal rights and does not reduce those rights.
