Td5 exhaust manifold stud kit for Defender and Discovery 2
This heavy duty Td5 exhaust manifold stud kit is built around 10 extended-length M8 grade 8.8 part-threaded engineering studs and copper-coated flanged all-metal locking nuts. It is designed for Defender Td5 and Discovery 2 Td5 exhaust manifolds where you want a proper fixing stack, not a generic bag of studs and nuts. The kit also includes the turbo gaskets, washers and fixing nuts normally disturbed when removing the Td5 exhaust manifold and turbo assembly.
Included:
- 10 × extended-length M8 grade 8.8 part-threaded engineering studs
- 10 × copper-coated flanged all-metal locking nuts, M8 × 1.25
- 2 × turbo oil feed banjo washers
- 1 × turbo oil drain gasket
- 1 × turbo-to-manifold gasket
- 1 × turbo-to-downpipe gasket
- 3 × M10 flanged nuts for turbo-to-downpipe fixing
- 3 × M8 flanged nuts for turbo-to-manifold fixing
Exhaust manifold studs
The studs are part-threaded engineering studs, not generic cut lengths of fully threaded bar. The plain shank helps keep the manifold fixing stack controlled, while the shorter threaded end is fitted into the cylinder head and the longer threaded end faces outward for the manifold and nut. Fully threaded studs can be fitted too deep, potentially damaging the back of the threaded hole and breaking into the coolant gallery.
Copper-coated locking nuts
The kit uses copper-coated flanged all-metal locking nuts. These are better suited to a heat-cycled exhaust manifold joint than nylon-insert or plain nuts, and the flange helps spread load across the manifold fixing face. Earlier versions of this kit used stainless Aerotight nuts; the current copper-coated steel locking nuts are the preferred choice with these steel studs.
Heat management
Even expensive Td5 exhaust manifolds can warp if exhaust gas temperatures are allowed to run out of control. Uncontrolled EGTs will damage any manifold setup, so we highly recommend fitting an exhaust temperature gauge where the vehicle is tuned, worked hard, used for towing or regularly driven under sustained load.
Stainless exhaust manifolds
Do not waste this kit on poor standard-pattern stainless Td5 exhaust manifolds. The well-known cheap stainless versions have been around for years and are not a proper long-term answer to Td5 manifold problems. A decent stud kit will not turn a poor manifold into a good one, and you do not want to be removing it again later the same day.
There are stainless exhaust manifolds that work, but they are designed properly, look very different to the standard Td5 manifold and cost considerably more. Stainless manifolds only work when the design, material choice and heat control are right.
