Use this free Land Rover MPG calculator to work out UK MPG, litres per 100km and fuel running cost from your own mileage and fuel figures. It is useful for Defender, Discovery, Range Rover and other Land Rover models where real-world fuel economy can vary depending on engine, gearing, tyres, load, towing and driving conditions.
This calculator works in your browser and does not store your fuel or mileage entries.
How to use the Land Rover MPG calculator
For the most accurate result, fill the tank, reset your trip meter, drive normally, then fill the tank again. Enter the distance driven and the amount of fuel added at the second fill-up.
The calculator will work out your UK MPG and litres per 100km. If you also enter the total fuel cost, it will show your cost per mile, cost per 100 miles and the fuel price per litre.
Why real-world Land Rover MPG varies
Fuel economy on older Land Rover models can vary widely depending on engine, vehicle weight, tyre size, gearing, roof racks, towing, driving style and journey type. A Defender used for short local trips will not normally return the same figures as one used for steady longer journeys.
This calculator is intended as a simple way to track your own real-world fuel use over time. It does not diagnose faults or recommend parts based on your MPG figure.
Fuel economy tracking tip
One isolated tank of fuel can be misleading, especially if the vehicle was used differently that week. For a more useful picture, record several fill-ups and compare the average over time.
How to improve real-world Land Rover MPG
Older Land Rover fuel economy is affected by far more than the engine alone. Tyres, gearing, vehicle weight, roof racks, short journeys, towing and driving style can all make a noticeable difference. A Defender on larger tyres or carrying extra equipment will usually use more fuel than a standard vehicle doing steady longer journeys.
Start with the basic checks
Before looking for expensive faults, check the simple things first. Correct tyre pressures, free-moving brakes, clean filters, suitable engine oil and a properly maintained fuel system all help the vehicle run as efficiently as it can. Binding brakes, underinflated tyres or a blocked air filter can all increase fuel use without creating an obvious breakdown.
Service condition matters
Regular servicing is especially important on working Land Rovers and older diesel models. Air filters, fuel filters, engine oil, transmission oils and cooling system condition all affect how easily the vehicle runs. A vehicle that is overdue a service may still drive normally, but it can take more fuel to do the same work.
Look for drag and extra load
Roof racks, ladders, large tyres, extra tools, expedition equipment and trailers all add weight or drag. Removing unused roof equipment and unnecessary load is one of the simplest ways to improve day-to-day MPG, especially on vehicles used for regular road journeys.
Track several fill-ups, not just one tank
One tank of fuel can be misleading. Short trips, cold weather, towing, off-road use or a week of local driving can make MPG look worse than normal. Recording several fill-ups gives a better picture of your vehicle’s real fuel economy over time.
This calculator is a tracking tool, not a diagnostic test. If your MPG changes suddenly, use the result as a reason to check the vehicle properly rather than replacing parts at random.
