Heavy Duty TD5 Clutches

Heavy duty Td5 clutches for Defender Td5 and Discovery 2 Td5, including uprated clutch kits, dual mass flywheel options and solid mass flywheel clutch kits for remapped, towing and harder-working vehicles.

A standard Td5 clutch can be adequate on an unmodified vehicle, but clutch slip becomes more likely when torque is increased through remapping, VNT turbo upgrades, towing, heavy loads or regular hard use. Slip is often noticed under load in higher gears, especially when accelerating from lower engine speeds.

Choosing the right heavy duty Td5 clutch

The best clutch choice depends on how the vehicle is used and whether you want to retain the dual mass flywheel or replace the clutch and flywheel together. The aim is not just holding power; pedal feel, drivability and long-term reliability also matter on a road-going Defender or Discovery 2.

• Remapped road and towing vehicles: choose an uprated organic clutch that gives stronger torque capacity while keeping normal drivability.
• Higher torque or VNT turbo setups: use a clutch rated for the extra torque rather than fitting another standard clutch.
• Gearbox-out jobs: consider whether the dual mass flywheel should be retained, replaced or converted to a solid mass flywheel kit while access is available.
• Existing clutch slip: if the clutch is already slipping, replacing it with the same standard setup may not be the best route on a tuned or hard-working Td5.

Dual mass or solid mass flywheel?

A dual mass flywheel keeps the original-style setup and can be a good choice where refinement is the main priority, but replacement dual mass flywheels are now very expensive and can cost more than the clutch kit itself.

A quality solid mass flywheel kit is often the more cost-effective route when the clutch and flywheel are being replaced together. The important point is to use a properly made, well-balanced kit rather than treating all solid flywheel conversions as the same.
