Land Rover Routine Servicing – Defender & Discovery
Twinwoods 4×4 is first and foremost a parts supplier for classic Land Rovers, with a small workshop alongside. We focus on servicing, diagnostics and sensible mechanical repairs on Defenders (up to 2016), Discovery 1 & 2 and Range Rover Classic – not full restorations or fast-fit work.
Please note: vehicles need to be left with us by prior arrangement – we don’t offer while-you-wait or “in and out in an afternoon” jobs.
What we do
- Routine servicing and health checks
- Pre-MOT checks
- Diagnostics and fault finding
- Hubs, wheel bearings, swivels, propshafts and diffs
- Full axle rebuilds
- Brake checks and upgrades
- Pre-trip checks for towing, green-laning and overland use
What we don’t do
- Full restorations or nut-and-bolt rebuilds
- Chassis swaps and major fabrication projects
- Long-term “project” vehicles that live here for weeks
- Non-Land Rover work
Routine Servicing
Regular servicing is the foundation of a reliable Land Rover, especially as these vehicles get older and work harder than they were ever designed for.
We’ll agree a service plan based on:
- Age and mileage
- How the vehicle is used (daily driver, towing, off-road, short journeys etc.)
- Your budget and priorities
For most diesel Land Rovers we generally recommend a 6000-mile service interval, or more frequently for heavy towing, off-road use or lots of short trips.
During a service we don’t just change oil and filters – we also:
- Check brakes, steering and suspension
- Inspect driveline components for wear and play
- Look for leaks, corrosion and emerging issues
- Road test the vehicle to see how it behaves in the real world
We mainly work on Defenders (up to 2016), Discovery 1, Discovery 2 and Range Rover Classic, and keep many common service and failure parts in stock. As most of our stocked parts are Td5 and 300Tdi these are the vehicles we commonly work on.
Diagnostics and Fault Finding
We’re frequently asked to look at problems that others haven’t managed to pin down – intermittent faults, poor running, warning lights, odd noises or handling quirks.
Diagnostics here means:
- Using proper Land Rover-capable diagnostic equipment - and recognising problems through live data and common sense rather than relying on fault codes
- Fuel pressure and other test equipment where needed
- Electrical testing and smoke testing where appropriate
- A logical, step-by-step approach instead of random parts-swapping
The aim is to identify the root cause, prioritise the work and stop you throwing money at the wrong bits.
If we discover something that would be better dealt with by a gearbox/transfer box specialist or another trade, we’ll point you in the right direction rather than guessing.

Sometimes during a job more work surfaces – when this happens we’ll keep you in the loop and discuss it with you, rather than just landing you a bigger bill than you were expecting. Larger shopping-list jobs will usually be split into stages and booked separately.
